I was trying to think of a healthy alternative to a birthday cake for our DS. I really don't want him having all that confection sugar and what not. So, anybody have any ideas? Has anybody else done this or do you'll think I'm going overboard? :-)
I have no problem with DS having a cake, but you could easily make a banana bread or pumkpin bread or something like that. It would still be a little sweet but not as sugary.
It's one day of the year, so my DS will get cake on his birthday. I'm pretty anal the rest of the year with all organic, healthy food. You could always do a mini-cupcake with different frosting.
I'm with you! I need to make my son a dairy and soy free cake b/c he is intolerant, I was leaning towards a carrot or banana cake. or maybe something with pumpkin. I doubt he would even eat chocolate b/c it isn't something he knows/would recognize and he is really picky. in fact he isn't doing so great with textures so I doubt he will even eat any of the cake I wind up making him. thanks to the PP for the carrot cake recipe! it sounds great.
I'm making her a carrot cake w/ yogurt-vanilla frosting. There is still sugar and some butter in it, so I'm not going to pretend it's health food, but I like it better than a traditional cake for her first.
I was going to make DS' cake, but we're getting new counters installed in the kitchen the day before DS' birthday... so that's not going to happen.
I was going to make him a blueberry cake (like the muffins, but a cake instead) and I found a banana glaze on wholesomebabyfood.com that I was going to use for icing.
But, since my kitchen is a freakin' mess... I ordered him his own small vanilla cake with whipped icing. The adults are getting a chocolate and vanilla cake with crazy buttercream icing.
We're doing a regular cake, but if it makes you feel any better, ds didn't eat a single bite of his birthday cake or frosting or ice cream at his 1st birthday. We have pictures of him looking at us like we're torturing him when he touched it.
