Daycare moms - when does the sickness stop

I mainly lurk on this board but would love some perspective from moms of older kids.  When does the daycare-related sickness slow down a little bit?  My son has been congested almost nonstop since he started daycare in August, had a stomach virus, and was diagnosed with RSV last week.  I am generally very happy with our work/daycare situation, but I feel so bad that he is constantly battling cold and other illnesses.

When does it get better?  Does it get better?

Re: Daycare moms - when does the sickness stop

  • It will end soon. DD1 was sick all through the 1st yr (including the summer) and about age 14 mo was better. At the age of 2 1/2 she got several ear infections (also during the summer) but she was old enough to tell us when they hurt.  Usually that was when we picked her up from DC, we'd bring her to urgent care for the antibiotics and she would return to school the following day. EI are not contagious.  A cpl months ago she got strep over a wknd and that was it. I got strep from her too and we know it doesn't discriminate against age. Now DD2 same age as your LO is sick all the time and DD1 is exposed to her and has never had what she's had b/c her immune system is more developed.

  • It ended for us at about a year. Since then we've been lucky!!! When he was little he had one ear ache, RSV, stomach bugs (2 I think), an unexplained fever for a full week, and diarrea 2-3 times. All in one year = very stressful at work! Since then DS hasn't been sick hardly at all! He was sent home once for vomiting (he only vomited once), and once for a fever. In the past year I think he's been out sick twice- last weekend he had a fever, I took him to a minute clinic and they confirmed strep- gave him antibiodics and 24 hours later he was back to school, only one day missed! So for us, yes, it got much better!! Good luck, I remember that stressful time well.
  • Our first 3-4 months in daycare were really tough but then it got a lot better.  Not sure if that was the length of time or DS' age (he started daycare at nearly 8 months).

  • I think it depends upon your child too. One of the mom's said her kid had been constantly sick since her son started my LO's day care room. Her child had been there for 4 months. My LO has been there for 2 months and hasnt been sick from day care yet. I caught a cold from all my coworkers (why dont people stay home when they are sneezing!) and i gave it to my LO. other than that I haven't had any encounters with being sick from day care
  • DD started daycare at 3.5 months and was sick w/ a variety of viral infections until she was a little under 2.  She's been minimally sick since she turned 2 - maybe 2 sick visits to the doctor, no ear infections this winter, etc.  (And, DH and I both got sinus and ear infections this winter, but DD stayed all clear!)

  • I'm glad you asked this I was just wondering the same thing! My dd tarted at 9 mths and is now 17 mths, she seems to be sick about once a month- so sad:( I'm hoping it gets better with time
  • Thanks, ladies.  Looks like we may be getting close to the end of nonstop sickness!  I hope so.  It is pitiful.

  • It does get better. My daughter got RSV a year ago. It blows. Not going to lie, because with every cold now comes coughing problems.  But.....this year, she's not sick as much, and the RSV repercussions with sickness have subsided. It's just what happens in those germ factories. They wash and bleach constantly, but it is inevitable. I was a daycare kid, and I remember when I got to kindergarten, I wasn't absent as much as my friends in elementary school. I may have gotten the flu once a year, but that was before they insisted kids get the flu shot every year like they do now. What I've learned is that it's way harder on us as the kids. Like right now, I've been sick for a week with wicked virus. My kid has been coughing. Me, I'm laying on the cough all "woe is me." My kid...she's running around like nothing's wrong.

Moral of the story...it does get better. Promise. Hang in there momma!

  • DS started daycare at 11 week and has RSV about 6 weeks later. He was sick about every 8 weeks for the entire first year. The sicknesses were fewer and far between for the next year.  He's 3.5 now and hasn't had more than a common cold in quite some time.

This is our house too! My poor DD has been sick so many times since starting DC at 3.5 months. She's had numerous colds, a stomach bug, Croup twice, an ear infection, and just yesterday developed a high fever! I thought she was getting better and hasn't had any type of fever in a week but guess not. I'm glad to hear that it stopped around a year for many. I'm hoping things start to get better for her soon.

  • For DS's first winter, it did not let up until the end of May.  The summer was great, the second fall/winter/spring were not quite as bad as the first.  Third year has been awesome!  He has a constant cold and has needed his inhaler a few times, but he hasn't had to miss school.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I'm not sure yet....DS is 13 months old today and he last went to the doctor for pink eye and an ear infection just over a couple weeks ago, so for us, it's still continuing. I am SO READY for it to stop as well.
