We've had a big rubbermaid type tote outside as our compost bin for a few years, and after a few winters, that thing is toast. It's totally cracked all over, and the lid is sort of a joke at this point because it's so wrecked. I'd like to get a real - intended to be a compost bin - bin or tumbler. Do you have one you like?
TIA!
Re: Please recommend your compost bin
I love wooden worm bins for kitchen scraps..easy to build yourself too. I bury our compost on one side until full, then switch to the other side (and start over again when the first side is ready to harvest). Our current one is a bench with arms/back on the front stoop
For outside yard waste...we go with a 3-bin system (big yard) similar to this.
If you go with a stand tumbler, just make sure the reviewers state how easy it is to turn, how well it mixes and how easy it is to harvest. If you get a bad one, you'll just have an unwieldy sludge in a barrel that you can't turn or harvest easily. The other trick with having only one bin...is that you are always adding new stuff, so it never really has time to "cook and age" to a final compost.
