3rd Trimester

New to 3rd Tri, Rib pain

Hey everyone, Just stepping up from the 2nd tri board... I'm a bit intimidated, I can't believe how quickly the past 6 months have gone by.

So, anyways... I've been having some strange rib pain on my right hand side just below my bra.  DH thinks it just from the baby pushing everything out, but it hurts really bad when I lay down or stretch.

Anyone else experience that?

Re: New to 3rd Tri, Rib pain

  • I have had this since before Christmas. He pushes his butt up into my ribs. No advice on how to relieve it! Sorry!

  • I see a lot of people asking questions about rib pain on this board, and I think I was probably one of them. As your baby runs out of room, it often ends up poking you in the ribs and when it turns head down, sometimes it even lodges its foot up in there. That's what happened to me. You could see Baby's foot smushed up in my ribcage on the ultrasound. It was very painful, and even after she dropped I could still feel the pain for quite some time. I felt that there was some internal bruising. The area felt numb and it hurt when I just brushed one finger against it up until about a week ago (I'm 39 weeks tomorrow). There really wasn't anything I could do about it in my situation, but I have heard of women whose doctors were able to kind of dislodge the baby from the ribcage or help them with some exercises that made the baby shift positions. My little girl just liked it up there too much to move, unfortunately.

  • I get this pain too, not as badly as the PP mentioned. I just put pressure where the pain is, sometimes he moves away, sometimes he stays. I figure it just one of the fun symptoms of pregnancy.

  • I did with DD.  I don't remember when it started, but I had constant rib pain with her.  Then I felt it during labor, and it was awful.  It never felt better until she was born.  I really just think it was the way she was positioned.  Either way, not pleasant at all!

  • YES!! I was going to post something about it today too! It's never happened until last night. I got up to go to the bathroom and it took me about 6 tries to get out of bed , b/c my ribs hurt so bad when I moved. And the pain still hasn't gone away. Yet another unexpected joy of pregnancy :)

  • I've experienced the exact same thing! It comes and goes. It tends to stay for a few days and then leaves for a few. it is pretty awful! The only relief I have gotten is from wearing a VERY loose bra, which isn't incredibly attractive. I had noticed when I took my bra off the pain subsided quite a bit and so far the loose bra has helped.
  • I was about to ask this same question! I've been experiencing this for the past week or so. It's not fun at all!
