I have seen an increased interest in Cecelia since Pam and Jim from The Office used it for their fictional DD. This interest however has came from name forums only, I haven't seen it used IRL yet. I would say slightly trendy...
Alternatives to Cece: Celie (The Color Purple) or Celia. I really like it in full, Cecelia. And LOVE the Simon and Garfunkel song.
Classic name, not trendy. Maybe becoming a little bit more popular, but not on the level of Isabella or anything like that. Most of the families I know who have little Cecelias/ Cecilias are pretty devout Catholics.

Even if it is becoming more popular, I think Cecelia is a classic name. If I picked up a resume with Cecelia on it, I wouldn't be able to guess within 10 years when she was born.
Is it the Office that is making more people choose it these days?
I hope not! Other than my friends Pam and Jim, I know just one other person who has used it in the past few years. I think Cecilia is a beautiful name and would love to use it one day (spelled this way to honor DH's grandfather, Cecil). If we did, we'd probably use Celie as a nickname.
I was interested to find out that even though Celia is used a lot as a nickname for Cecilia/Cecelia, it actually comes from a different Greek name. It wasn't used much at all until Shakespeare used it for a character in How You Like It. Yes, I am a name nerd.

No more so than all the other old school names - Vivian, Sylvia, Ruby, etc. It's on our list for #3 if it's a girl, and I put it on the list because I have yet to hear of another one IRL.
Now I'm confused on the spelling. I'd seen it mostly as Cecilia, and hadn't considered Cecelia at all. Is one more "right" than the other?

If you go by the SSA name list (which is the only objective measurement of popularity), you'll see that both Cecelia and Cecilia have been hovering around the same spot for pretty much the last 5 years.
My grandmother's middle name is Cecelia. It always made me think of the Simon and Garfunkel song But I really love the name! I am an elementary school teacher and have taught hundreds of students but actually never had one named Cecelia.

I don't think so. I would assume it's one culture's spelling over the other. H's grandmother was spelled Cece rather Ceci. And she would be 97 if she were alive.

I also don't see it as trendy. It may have increased in popularity a bit, but it isn't trendy--it is a classic name.
If not Cece, I like Celia best as a nickname for Cecilia/Cecelia.

I think it's beautiful and unlikely to break the top 10 names.
In Italian, its pronounced Cheh-chee-lee-ah and Ceci (Cheh-chee) is a popular nickname for it.
Several of my Catholic friends took Cecilia as their confirmation name, St Cecilia is the patron saint of music.

So no, it's not trendy at all.
I love the name - it's a character name on "New Girl" - so maybe it's creeping into becoming more popular.
