What did your OB tell you about when to go into L & D if you go into labour? I meant to ask mine last week but forgot. Do you wait for the 5-1-1 rule or do you go in right away since they want to monitor you so much more closely? I should definitely know this by this point!
Re: XP: If you're trying for a VBAC...
Personally, I'd recommend waiting as long as possible, as the less time you spend in the hospital, the less likely you are to experience the many interventions that can lead to a c-section.
But, you should go in whenever you feel like you cannot adequately manage the labor on your own anymore. Or, if you feel the urge to push of course...
My MW said to wait until I was in "full-blown labor". I hoped to get to the hospital when I was pushing, and I pretty much got there at that point.
This is a good summary of the emotional signposts of labor, which can help. https://www.angelfire.com/nb/doulaamanda/Labor.html
Have you thought about a doula? She could help you figure out how far along you are, since they're trained to recognize the stages of labor.
ETA: When my labor started, I was having contractions five minutes apart, lasting at least 30 seconds. So the 5-1-1 rule would have put me in the hospital way too early.
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
My situations is a bit different, as I'm planning a home birth at a friend's house since we live up in the mountains (outside the 30 minute to a hospital limit the NM Midwifery Assoc has), and since I got to 9cm last time, and this is my second...it's hard to know what to expect. If I'm at home, I'm planning to get things packed in the car, and my son ready to go, when I feel like my contractions are consistent enough to called actual labor.
If I had a doctor and was planning a hospital birth, I'd probably wait quite a bit longer and try to labor as much as possible at home before going to the hospital. It really just comes down to what you're comfortable with, and what your doctor wants you to do (and whether or not you agree with it).
When I interviewed my new OB/Gyn he said to wait until 3-1-1 or I feel like I need to come in unless there is a problem.
Basically he suggests laboring at home as long as possible before heading in, however the hospital is 5 minutes from my house and probably 20 from the furthest neighborhood so travel isn't a big issue.
With DS, the midwife said come in when your doula tells you it's time to head this way, or when you feel you need to be at the hospital.
With this baby, the OB said to head in when my doula and I feel it is time to get to the hospital.
Neither time did anyone give me a "time rule" for contractions.
