Pregnant after a Loss

Question about midwives

I went with a friend to her ob appt the other day. She's a few weeks ahead of me and uses a midwife. After talking with the midwife myself, and seeing how she handled my friend, and discussed the birth plan a bit, I decided I really really like her and would be completely interested in using her also. She is only one of two midwives in my area. Can I hire her along with my regular ob or would I need to swap to her practice?

Re: Question about midwives

  • I believe you would need to swap to her practice and she would be your primary prenatal caregiver. She would deliver your baby. It's good to make sure she has a connection (which I believe they all do?) with an OB so in case you needed a c-section, etc. you would be all set. I like the idea of a midwife but like my OB and an option to kind of give you a neat birth experience is looking into hiring a doula...check it out!

  • I agree with PP that you'd probably have to swap. But give the office a call and see what they have to say. My OB practice has several OBs and a few CNMs. My u/s on Monday will be with a CNM and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that experience compares to my dealings with other docs... I'm thinking I might like her a lot too. Hope it all works out for you!

  • Talk to both about it. It is possible to go to both but it will cost more. Your ob may be a back up for an emergency situation. Anything is possible. I am using a midwife alone. But one of the midwife I talked to had a back up doc that would be on call if emergency problems as long as you saw him at least once while pregnant.

  • I would talk to both.  The hospital I got to only has you see a doctor for the 8 week, 20 week and then around 7-8 months.  Other than that, we see Nurse Practitioners the rest of the time unless there are any major concerns.  So maybe they can do both.  Doesn't hurt to ask.

  • I assume your insurance will not allow you two "primary" prenatal caregivers.  If you go with the MW, at least you'll always know that an OB will be available at the hospital 24 hours a day if needed.  Does this MW use a birthing center?  Have rights at a hospital?  My practice is one MW and one OB together.  You can see either or both just bouncing back and forth between appointments.  YOu have to see the OB if there's a medical condition or concern.  A previous loss for an unknown reason doesn't count as medically concerning, so I see the MW.  I have had some visits with the OB before and like her, too.  I will get both the OB and my MW assisting for my c/s at the hospital if I make it to my scheduled surgery when they're both on.  My MW had regular on-call shifts at the hospital and does hospital deliveries only, with out without pain medications.  She just can't do c/s's obviously, but she does assist as needed.
