Trying to Get Pregnant

Normal or Call the Dr.....newbie ?

I have been on BCP for the past 10 years and just got off in Feb. I have heard many people say that the chance of ovulation after the pill the first month is slim. Therefore, DH and I have decided to "just see what happens" without charting and tempting just yet.

For the last 2-3 days, I have experienced cramping (similar to AF) on my right side. Also, my bbs are sore. Tonight, the cramping has moved more centered. Is this ovulation pains or should I be concerned about something else and call my doctor? I've never really cramped before or while taking BCP so this is hard for me to bare for 3 days!!

I know this is a silly question but since this pain is more intense than my AF pain, I am a little concerned. Obviously, I'm a newbie at TTC

  • If the pain is really severe then I would go to the Doctor just to make sure that it's not something more serious. It can take up to 6 months to 1 year for your cycle to get back "normal" from coming off of the pill. It just sounds like the normal AF symptoms to me but like I said if the pain is to unbearable just go to the doctor. I have ovarian cysts and sometimes they burst and I have to go to the ER because I get the pains you are talking about. I'm not saying you have cysts but just go to the doc.

  • It sounds like AF. My first few periods coming off of BC were horrible. It was an intense pain that just radiated all over, but turned out to be nothing more then AF.

That isn't to say not to see a doctor, I would absolutely see one if it persists. Or gets worse.

  • If it's unbearable and you are concerned go to the doctor, but I'm with these other ladies, probably just cramping. I was on BCP for 14 yrs and since being off am completely surprised by all the symptoms. A few more cycles and you'll know what your "normal" is. GL

Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements

  • Your first real AF after BC is going to be rough... I'm experiencing it right now, it's no fun. I agree though, if it gets really bad, call the DR and see what they think.

  • I agree with what everyone else has said, it sounds like AF, but if things get worse, definitely call your OB.

  • Thanks everyone!! You have helped calm me down!! AF is "due" until 3/20 but coming off the pills, I know my cycle could be weird for a while!! Today, no pain! Thanks again! What would I do without you ladies to vent to. DH thinks I'm crazy. Lol

  • A couple of things (although I mainly agree with PPs) -

    1. Although it takes many women several cycles to O after coming off BCP, that isn't always the case.  (I O'ed my first cycle off of BCP - complete with temp shift, + OPKs, CM, and cramping.)
    2. If this is your first cycle off BCP, how do you know when AF is "due"?  Even if you are basing that off your normal cycle length pre-AF, it could be different this time.

This is what I thought may be happening but wasn't sure. I have always had a regular cycle before BCP and when I took a break once before.

  • I took my last BC pill in November after being on it for around 13 years and before I started charting I noticed that I had a pain on my left side the first month and then my right side the second month. Once I started charting it turns out that was ovulation pain. If its unbearable I would probably check with your doctor to be sure there is no but if it stops I would start charting just so you know what is happening with your body. I learned so much just from the lessons that FF sends, its crazy how much they leave out in school.  HTH Smile

  • Luckily, the pain wasn't unbearable and it went away. I'm just use to having mild cramps for a few minutes right before AF. This was mild, but localized to one side all day. Add the sore bbs to that and I was one unhappy lady! Today, no pains
