My heart is breaking....damn you diaper rash!

My girls sitter just called and told me that Harper had diaper rash REALLY bad.  She has been having diarhera for the last two days, we think because she is teething.  She said that the rash is so bad that she is bleeding and constantly crying.  BREAKS MY HEART.  What do you or did you do for diaper rash?

Re: My heart is breaking....damn you diaper rash!

  • Switch to warm wash cloths to wipe her clean and I swear by Bordeauxs Butt Paste. I hope this helps. Poor baby.

  • Poor baby! With bleeding, that warrants a trip to the pedi. My one DD had it wicked bad too (teething makes their diapers TOXIC) and her little skin broke. They had to do a Rx-cream so that it would avoid infection. Worked like a charm.

Other tips they gave were: stop using wipes until it's cleared. Use wash cloths (just use old ones you don't mind tossing) and a low-set blow dryer to be sure she's totally dry. Once the skin is healed, a great "at-home" diaper cream that works wonders is making a paste out of pure cornstarch (i.e. baby powder that's unscented) and Maalox. The antacid really helps treat that irritated skin.

HTH and hope your DD is feeling better soon!

  • Ditto the warm baby wash cloths for cleaning. Also, make sure you PAT dry (don't wipe, or if you have to wipe do it very slowly and gently).

Make sure she is dry and then apply a very thick coating of butt cream (we also use buttpaste). DD's never had a bad diaper rash but that is because we are religious about the buttcream & changing her diaper at least every hour or two hours. The only time she goes a long time without a change is overnight.

For overnight we lather on the buttcream & put a layer of vaseline over it. Also, you might consider changing wipe type or even diaper brand. Luvs gave DD the worst skin irritation until we switched to pampers and huggies. Good luck!

If you have the squirt bottle they gave you for post partum (or you can get one at the dollar store) you can use it and pat dry.

  • I have had really good luck using virgin coconut oil for diaper rash. It clears it up overnight (though she has never had it that badly). Ive used desitin, butt baste and different powders and none have ever really done much. The coconut cleared it up overnight. Smells good and is completely natural.

  • I like using wipes instead of washcloths and I found the lansinoh wipes are super gentle, they sell them with the lansinoh BFing products. They are a little expensive so I use them only when LO has a rash. Also triple paste is an absolute miracle worker! I spread in on thick if LO has a rash. I also use aveeno oatmeal bath when he has a rash.

I've also heard coconut oil works great.  I also had bleeding diaper rash a couple weeks ago and Triple Paste worked great! It's expensive but worth it.  You can buy it at BRU or Amazon I know.

  • My daughter had a bad diaper rash while on antibiotics for an ear infection, though it never got so bad that it bled, just super red and blister-y looking.  I tried Boudreaux's butt paste and this fancy boutique one that someone gave us, but finally it was our DCP's suggestion of Aquaphor Baby that worked.  It's like Vaseline, very thick and gel-like, worked really well and she was cleared up in a day.

  • If the diaper is just wet and NOT soiled (no poop), you don't even need to use wipes.  Urine is sterile, and in the old days they used it as a cleaning fluid due to its ammonium content.  So unless the baby's soiled, using the wipe to clean a bottom that's already been cleaned naturally is redundant (and in this case, you really want to minimize the wiping because of how irritated the skin is).

  • We had some issues with horrible diaper rash too. In our case Butt Paste worked better for us than the Triple Paste. As others have said, use wet wash cloths if there is poop or wash out the wipes with water before using. Pat the area with a dry washcloth and if possible let her bum air out by placing her on a blanket or waterproof pad for awhile if possible before diapering.

  • Mine has a really bad rash and it wasnt going away. Doc called in a prescription but my daycare spent 2 days with her on a big pad for 30 mins or so at a time. She aired out for hours over the course of the day- pooped and peed on it but was exposed and not in diapers all day. It has gotten WAY better and almost healed. The butt paste wasn't working. I havent used the prescription yet- helps apparently with yeast because it is healing.

Doctor said if it is yeast, hard to clear up on its own but what they are doing is working great!

  • Ditto PP's on using a washcloth instead of wipes.

When DS gets a bad rash, I make my own triple paste: lanolin, Aquaphor (or vaseline) and any diaper cream. That usually helps clear it up very quickly.

  • We had a bleeding diaper rash and found the cure was:

Frequent baths with baking soda ( just a few teaspoons if you are still in an infant tub)

    Lots of naked baby time

    Aquaphor!!!

     HTH!

  • You should really call the pedi. With both of my LO's we had what looked like bad diaper rash that turned out to be strep. If that is the case, they need to be put on antibiotics. Dr. always said it was a good thing I had brought them in, it can be really bad if not treated.  It's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!!

  • After gently wiping off as much as I could I put a fresh diaper under LO and use the bulb snot sucker to squirt warm water to clean the rest. The rinsing really helps also adding some baking soda to the water neutralizes the acid and stops the burning then rinse with just water. Follow with rash cream and change diaper every 2 hours weather  needed or not.

  • If you are looking for a product - this is the answer:

    https://www.endit.com/

It was developed in my hometown and everyone swears by it.  I got some for my baby shower (had never heard of it before then) and the entire crowd went nuts about how well it works.  I haven't had much issue with diaper rash yet, but have used it where DDs chunky legs get chaffed.  It is magic.  Also, it isn't just for diaper rash.

Only down side - it smells like smoked bacon.  (DH and dog don't seem to have a problem with the smell).

The website is a little old school and cheesy - but I promise, you won't regret buying it.

  • We use caldesene powder for diaper rashes - alternating it with desitin.  It has the same active ingredient as the diaper cream, but I feel like it helps dry up a rash better.
