Two Under 2

Small house and 3 kids

I need some pointers on how to fit everyone in without driving us nuts! Our home is 1330 sq ft. The bedrooms are tiny and there are 3 including the master. We usually keep baby with us for 4-6 months so we have time, but DD will be 2 just at the time this baby comes. DD is still in her crib, but we will most likely transition her within a few months after the baby is born. Their rooms are the same size, and we plan on putting DD with DS. Its going to be so tight that the dresser will be gone and we'll have to redo their closest with a system for drawers etc. I also wonder how DS will take to his sister being in his room...plus he wakes up super early and I hope he wont wake her!

Any tips on how to keep your house from feeling SO cramped with 3 kids? Even the living space is small, but we just worked on purging so it is getting better.

Any of your personal experiences will help ease my nesting mind! Thank you!

Re: Small house and 3 kids

  • I don't have 3 kids but I do have a small bedroom for my 2 kids to share. We just basically treat the small bedroom as a very utilitarian space. All they have to do there is sleep so they don't need much room or much stuff. We also pare down their wardrobes so that they have just about a drawerful each in the changing table and that's it (although we do have plenty of storage space elsewhere so that helps).

We also have a lot of multi-use toys so that our toy area isn't super crowded with lots of different things, but multiple ages of kids can still enjoy it. Good luck!

  • We are in the same boat!

We live in a mobile home with 3 bedrooms.  The kids bedrooms are pretty small and since we don't have a basement or extra storage space we have an upright freezer and a set of shelving in DD's current room.

DS and DD will be sharing a room but not until I'm ready to transition the baby out of our room. DS has a big kid bed and DD will be in a crib. Baby will also be in a mini crib(DD is in it now) DS's bed is like a mini loft so there is storage under the steps and under the bed for his clothes.  DD will have her clothes hanging in the closet and they will share a small dresser.

I am getting rid of the changing table(there is 1 attached to the mini crib so we'll still have 1) There are no toys or play things in either of the room.  I do have shelves up where they can't reach them that hold the piggy banks, books, stuffed animals, and keepsakes.

The toys are all in the living room in a small tote and I rotate out the toys every month or so. That way they don't have too many in the house and they don't get bored.

  • Our "girls room" is about the size of a generous walk in closet.  We have two of these toddler beds and a six drawer dresser in the room.  Each child has three drawers and a "row" in the closet (there is a high row and a lower row).  When they are old enough we will put bunk beds in the room, just like we did in the boys room.  We do have four rooms in our house, but we have an au pair, so to me it doesn't really count Big Smile.

  • We are thinking about #3 and our house is similar in size. We also will roomshare with the baby for the first year, then move our older 2 in bunkbeds in one room/baby in another. We may rearrange this as the kids get older, but this is our plan for the younger years.

I just think keeping organized is key. We're lucky to have big closets in our BRs which help a lot.

Also, can you finish your basement? We did that to make a playroom, as our house is only 1200 sq ft without it.
