Too Petite for Ergo?

Re: Too Petite for Ergo?

  • Is the waist strap on your hips or around your waist?  I am not quite that low in weight but I know where I position the waist strap makes a huge difference in where I feel DS weight (he weighs 16.5 lbs and I can carry him hiking for several hours with no problems).

  • The strap should definitely be on your hips, not on your waist.  Maybe try looking on youtube to make sure you have it in the right position.  I'm about 115lbs not pregnant and didn't have any problems with the Ergo being too big.  FWIW, the Becco Gemini is a bit smaller of a soft-structured carrier (I've tried it on, but don't own it...on my wish list for #2).  GL!
  • It is possible that it's just not a good carrier for you. I know some avid baby wearers actually prefer other carriers over the Ergo. Have you tried something else like the Becco or maybe a mei tai?
  • I am not a huge fan of the ergo for me , but I mostly don't like the shoulder straps. I always wore the " waist" belt pretty low on my hips and it worked fine. DH loved the ergo though. I'd much rather have a wrap.

  • Maybe I should have gone with the Ergo...I got the Becco Butterfly, but after using it with my toddler on some airport runs, I have a feeling it's a little short for my long torso (I'm 5'7")

  • I'm very petite (5 ft 2 and maybe 105-ish - perhaps a leetle bigger than you?), and I LOVE my Ergo because of the hip strap that alleviates a lot of the weight on my back. I have very narrow back/ shoulders (my big frame pack for backpacking trips is a preteen sized one) and have found that the Ergo adjusts nicely to my small frame and I was able to carry my child in in easily until he was around 30 pounds. We aren't using it for him anymore, mostly because he walks and runs so well now that he doesn't want to ride in it.

That said, I don't have a lot of experience with other carriers; I did do a good bit of research first, though, and largely based my selection on the fact that the Ergo was highly recommended for smaller women due to the way it redistributes weight. Hope that helps! Maybe take it into a store where they sell Ergo carriers and have the people there help you adjust it properly so you know what it should feel like? Or have a friend help?
