got my beco rental in the mail.. have a few questions

I rented a Beco Butterfly and I just received it in the mail.  I put Charlie in it and I feel like his legs are too straddled.  Is it okay to carry him with his legs straddled at this age? He is about 10 pounds.  Also, I feel like he sat pretty low. I had to stretch my neck down to kiss his forehead, and I had all the straps tightened to what I felt like was pretty tight and comfortable.  Also, should the waist band be tight around my hips? I felt like it kept riding up to above my hips- more around my waist.

I want to make sure I am wearing the carrier right before I decide if I like it or not.  I didn't like that the fabric was between Charlie and I, because he was snuggled up to a barrier versus being snuggled right up to my shirt, so I would probably go for the Gemini if I decide to stick with the carrier.

  • I think at that age it's probably more comfortable for him to not be straddled but I haven't tried one so I can't say from experience!

Where did you get one for trial? I'd really like to at least try one on before I buy one but no stores here carry them.

  • Did it come with the infant insert?

You're supposed to use it until LO is about 15 lbs.  It will pull him up much higher and is nowhere near as wide between their legs.

With that being said, DS was long and skinny so we couldn't use it very long.  I just kept his feet tucked in, but as you said, he will be very low. You could also roll up a small blanket/towel and put it under his bum and it will help with the feet position too.

  • I have a gemini. Yes, the band should be around your hips.  I've never tried on a butterfly, but looking at my friend's I don't think they fit the same way.  So don't base your opinions on the fit on the butterfly because the gemini may fit differently.

I rented from here. It was so easy and I'm glad I did it before buying the carrier since it is so expensive.

  • yes, it came with the infant insert. I will try rolling a little blanket up to boost him higher and hopefully then his legs won't be as straddled.  I use the Moby now, so I am just so used to how that holds the baby that this carrier feels so much different. I will play with it a little more today and see if I can get the hang of it! Thanks!
  • let me try bigger

  • I am comfortable wearing it, and he seems to be comfortable- I was just concerned about his legs.  I watched the DVD it came with today and got a better idea of how to position his legs once he is in the carrier.
  • It looks like his legs are bent and knees are higher than his bum, right? If so--that seems fine. I've heard that there is some researcher in Germany who thinks babies should always have legs out and that froggy legs in is not best. In which case, you are golden. I haven't read it, so I have no personal opinion, but I know that  a presentation of the results translated from German will a session at the International Babywearing Conference this summer.
