1st Trimester

Beta and Thyroid Test

My first Beta at 14 dpo was 78. I had it tested again at 16 dpo and it was 157. They also tested my thryoid at this time and she said that is completely off. It was 9.29. I am now waiting on the OB to call me, but she said that that could be causing a problem.

Anyone have a similar issue. I thought doubling would be good, but she said that they like to see triple.

Re: Beta and Thyroid Test

  • My first beta was 70 @ 14DPO, and that was last Wed, my Dr is wanting to me to wait until monday to get second beta done, I'm glad that your doctor is not making you wait unlike mine! The waiting is driving me crazy! Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • Hi Kristina - if your TSH is 9.29 you definitely need to be on thyroid medication to bring that number down.

I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and have to get my blood drawn frequently during this pregnancy (my first).  I actually just had an appointment today and the reference range for TSH during pregnancy is 0.2-4.7, I know my Endocrinologist likes the TSH as close to 1 as possible.

    Good luck!!

  • Lauren - Yeah, the nurse said it definitely needs to be addressed ASAP. But of course, the doctor is out of the office today and will be back in tomorrow morning and will call me then. I am just worried about going these past few weeks without the medication and the effects that it will have on the baby now. This is just adding more stress, which I'm sure doesn't help any!

  • Ahhh, okay. I think you will be fine and it was caught early which is great.

Here is a link to Baby Center.com that actually has a thyroid issues/concerns forum...I've found it to be a GREAT help...tons of info and others experiences. :)

  • I've been heavy my whole life and have always struggled to lose weight. When I'd go to the doctor for a cold I'd get a lecture about my weight. Now I'm just pissed to know that it might get fixed when it's too late.

The nurse said that my beta should triple. The nurse the other day said double. I thought it was double too. But now that has me uptight too!!!

  • I was told double for beta, but the thyroid would concern me and I would get seen soon. I have hypothyroidism and while PG my doc wants my levels to be right around 2.5.

Good luck and I hope everything is ok.

I don't know anything about Thyroid (do they automatically test for that when they do the blood draws?)  But it is definitely double in 48-72 hrs not triple.  First time around I thought it was supposed to double daily and the nurse said no... every 48-72 hrs.  The further along you get it can take up to 96 hours.

  • i have hypothyroidism and my levels at my worst were between a 6 and a 7.  you definitely need to see an endocrinologist asap.  they will want your tsh levels below 2 especially if you are pregnant.
