Low Progestrone Levels

Hi Ladies,

I am two weeks pregnant and just received a message from my doctor telling me that I have low progestrone levels. My progestrone level is a 9. She said I should start taking a progestrone supplement vaginally to prevent miscarriage. I am not a huge fan of taking western medicine without knowing more and called my doc back but she is gone for the day.

Anyone else have low progestrone levels? Did you have to take a supplement? I have been reading online that some of the prescribed progestrone supplements can make you dizzy and extremely fatigued.

I am thinking I want another blood test before staring to take supplements to see if my progestrone levels have increased at all.

If anyone has had a similar experience, please share.

Thank you.

Re: Low Progestrone Levels

  • IMO being dizzy and fatigued is a small price to pay for having a healthy baby. I have had 2 m/c and with the second my pg was low so they put me on a supplement orally. While it did make me extremely exhausted, I would have done anything for that little baby to have made it full term. FX for yours to be a sticky baby!

  • They want to see a level of at least 10-15, so you're close, but frankly, this isn't something I'd wait around on - if the level drops, you will most likely lose the baby.  I had low progesterone in one cycle of TTC while undergoing fertility treatments, and used the vaginal supplement.  I didn't have any increase in dizziness or fatigue, just some annoying discharge occasionally.  I used it for a week, until my BFN that cycle, but if I'd gotten a BFP, I would have continued on the supplement until 10-12w, when the placenta is fully operational and producing its own progesterone.

  • Dizziness and fatigue are only part of taking the supplement orally. I've taken it for this past year during the last half of every cycle.

Vaginal supplements are messy and sometimes cause a bit of cervical spotting but that's about it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I have low progesterone levels in my current pregnancy ( i am at a 6) and also in my last pregnancy. I Have a healthy son from the last time when I was taking supplements orally. Those make me seriously tired but like the pp said It was worth it and I am doing it again to make sure I have my second sticky baby! GL!

  • I would definitely do it. My friend had a very low 4, and immediately got on the supplements the day they got her tests back.  She ended up with a healthy baby girl.

  • Pregnancy causes me dizziness and fatigue...

But I had to take prometrium with DD.  My OB told me it was a natural hormone if that makes you feel better.

  • My first progesterone level was a 5.4 which was critically low, they put me on Progesterone supplements twice a day orally and it jumped up nicely.  The only side effect I get is that they make me sleepy.

  • it seems dizziness & fatigue comes along with the oral progesterone and prometrium. i've used both prometrium and progesterone vaginally. i prefer the progesterone. i haven't experienced any side effects from either of them. my progesterone isn't low, it's a precaution from prior losses. GL with your decision.

also, just a little education: you can't be 2 weeks pregnant. pregnancy dating starts from your period, not from ovulation. for those super early tests (say, 7dpo), they're 3 weeks at the earliest should they get a +HPT on 7dpo. you're probably more like 4 weeks pregnant, 2 weeks post O. which makes you farther along than you thought :)

  • I have to take prometrium (progesterone supplements, oral). I started at about 3.5 weeks, right after I found out I'm pregnant and have been taking them since, and will until I'm out of the first tri. They aren't bad at all, Yeah you get a bit of fatigue but I'll take it over a miscarriage.

  • I did a lot of research on this with my last m/c. It is very debated whether or not low progesterone is a cause or a symptom of a m/c. However I felt I would do whatever it took to try to prevent another m/c from happening. 9 is very low I would start taking it asap. They like to see a minimum of a 14 progesterone. I took it with my last but still ended in m/c. I never felt dizzy. It does say to take at night so if you do have symptoms you will sleep through them. Good Luck and prayers for you!

  • I agree with the post above.  As soon as I found out I was pregnant, they put me on Crinone (vaginal progesterone) because my level was a 4.  I saw the baby and heard the heartbeat at 7 weeks, so I'm assuming it's working!  It honestly isn't bad and I take it at night since it's supposed to make you sleepy.  I go back tomorrow to check my levels....hopefully all good!  Good luck!
