I received a thermometer pacifier at one of my showers, but I have my doubts as to its accuracy. We'll see, I guess. I had registered for one that you hold on the forehead, but who knows if that would work either.
My sister got m both ; the saftey first one for the ear ... she said she swore by it with all three of her kids & then we got the smaller safety first one for rectal.
At a minimum get a rectal. It is by far the most accurate and especially in a newborn a pediatrician will absolutely want to know a rectal temp if you call about a fever. You can also get an ear or temporal if you want for those times when you *think* there might be a fever and want to see if it's elevated at all before jumping right to the rectal. So for example, if an ear or temporal comes back high enough for concern, you'll still want to use the rectal to get an accurate temp for the doctor.
Hate, hate, hate ear thermometers. Notoriously inacurate. For a NB, you need rectal, then can use underarm as they get a little bigger and their temps become a little more stable. From about 8 months and up, I use the dermal forehead thermometers. They are my favorite.
I really like the graco instant ear thermometer. Works great. We also have the pricey temporal artery one that you swipe across the forehead but it is NEVER accurate!

I love my ear thermometer, we've been using it for 7 years. You just have to know it reads lower than rectal. I have one of those too just a cheap safty first one but as my first got older I found the ear far better.
Braun ear thermometer is the best. I bought a cheaper one and it was awful. Spend the extra money... It will be worth it. Rectal thermometers can be inexpensive for backup.

I bought the forehead one and we all tried it. It is such a pain in the a$$! It doesnt always register and will like freeze on the last temp. I'm getting an ear one.
Vicks rectal therm................its the best!!! If you ever have to call the nurse while your LO is sick, they will ask you if you took a rectal temp, if you didn't they will tell yo uto go take one and call back
