Pregnant after a Loss

Would I be a bad mom if...

we mounted a small flat screen above the dresser/changing area in the nursery? We have it so might as well use it DH thinks. I don't mind the idea of having a TV in the nursery... as long as the cords and stuff are in the wall and not dangling, right? The mount things are safe I've heard? I don't know....

Re: Would I be a bad mom if...

  • I personally have never liked the idea of a TV in any of the bedrooms, but it's your family and your decision and if it works for you I say go for it!

Plus, it'll keep you entertained/awake when LO's awake a lot

  • Yeah I don't care either way that it's actually in there... just the safety issue of putting it above the changing area is what kind of makes me question it. It's the only place though so I guess I have a while to make that decision.

  • First of all, you could never be a bad mom.

Second of all, I love the name Mallory!!!

Third, there are super sturdy brackets that they have for wall mounted tv screens, I would think as long as it is mounted well in the studs and all of the cables are tucked behind or ran through the walls that you should be fine.

    (((((hugs))))

  • I think the temptation to turn it on would be too strong for me, and I know the AAP recommends no TV under 2 (which I'm sure we won't manage, though I'd like to try to limit exposure, if I can). I always thought if I had a small flat screen I'd mount it in the kitchen so I could watch a show while I prep/cook dinner. Is that an option for you guys?

Either way, you certainly wouldn't be a bad mom! Children who are loved and respected grow up fine even with Dora the Explorer :P

  • I personally would never mount anything over a changing table. Not pic, not letters and not tv. But the idea of a tv in the nursery doesn't bug me.

I don't think it's a big deal for when LO is really little, but as they get to be older it might become problematic to get them to turn it off for bed and stuff like that. I wasn't allowed to have a TV in my room until I was a teen.

I had one in my room for many years and it's why I wont have them in our bedrooms.

  • I personally see nothing wrong with it. DS has a tv in his room and playroom. But he knows, because we've enforced it since day one, that bedtime is bedtime and the tv stays off. Matter of fact, he mostly only watches tv when he's in the living room and rarely asks to turn it on in his bedroom. And when it's bedtime and it goes off, he never complains. That being said, we already have a tv in the room that will be the nursery, and I plan to keep it in there. I figure I can turn it on when i'm up in the middle of the night with LO without going all the way into the living room and possibly waking everyone up.

  • I don't see any issues with it.. I mean, those mounts are extremely sturdy -- I've seen some pretty big TVs hung by wallmounts!! I'm assuming you're not talking about hanging a 55" TV over your changing table!

I mean, if the hangup is having it over the changing table.. I'd reposition the furniture then if that makes you more comfortable.. but, as far as having it in the nursery.. I see no problems there.. it's more for your own entertainment then for LO's.. something to keep you awake while nursing and such..

My Sister has a TV in my nephew's room.. she's had it in there since they were babies.. solely for the purpose of noise while she was nursing.. as they got older, she keeps the remote on top of the TV, which neither of them could even come close to reaching.. so, she has control when the TV is on and when it's off.. they rarely ever have it on..

Just my thoughts though :)  Everyone is different!

  • I'm confident in the safety of the mount so long as it's not pulled at, which it likely would be as soon as your child couple stand when you pull her pants up at the changing table.  As far as the whole idea of a TV in there, I'd say thumbs down.  TV isn't reccomended by the AAP until the age of 2, not necessarily because it's harmful to the infant/toddler, but because it inhibits chances for real life learning.  Diaper change time is an awesome time for face time, singing, signing, talking, etc...  A caregiver will always trump a TV in my mind.  (That being said, when DS is sick we do watch an occasional Sesame Street or a DVR'ed puppy or kitty show from animal planet since he loves animals.  I just don't think it's needed in their bedroom.  I actually never had a TV in my bedroom until college).

  • I'm planning on having a tv in the nursery.  There's already one in that room, because I work out there and use it for DVDs and to watch when I'm on my elliptical.  I figured I'd just keep it there so that I can watch tv or a movie while BFing, or just feeling like I need to be close by to LO.  Once he gets old enough to actually watch tv himself, we'll take it out, cause I don't like the idea of a tv in a kid's room.

This is my plan too. It is on a TV stand right now but I want to mount to make more room. Plus we will probably be in a new house by the time she actually watches...

This. So much this. I work for a non-profit that supports parents and early child care providers, and I have learned SO MUCH. I still know that I'm going to be overwhelmed and make about a million mistakes, but it's so inspiring to read about how their brains work and understand how fundamental their first few years can be.

ETA - But if you do choose to put it in there, I def don't think that makes you a bad mom whatsoever!!!

This! I've learned the hard way. We put a small flat screen in DS room. Thinking I would nurse in there and use it. Well...I don't think I nursed and watched the tv in there once. Now that he is 2 he loves watching Disney shows and wants it on. Don't get me wrong its great when I need to go do something (ie make dinner) but when I turn it off he isn't a happy camper a lot of times.

  • I think it should be perfectly fine! Just make sure to get the proper mount for the size/weight of the TV.
