Soo.. I'm a FTM and I LOVE the beach.. my LO will be going when only a few months old.. Any tips or advice as to what to take or what cool gear there is out there to have?
I think one of those 4-legged sun shades instead of an umbrella - they offer more shade and are sturdier
talk to your doc about what sunscreen he/she recommends. Sunscreens (even baby ones) can be too harsh for a young infant's skin (you'll definitely need sunscreen - I'm not suggesting going without by any means)
A sun hat is a good idea, too (if he/she will keep it on their head!)
A cooler for breastmilk/formula if you don't want to breastfeed at the beach
All the regular things you need for baby - change of diapers (bring more than you think you'll need), wipes, change of clothes, etc
Why are people so rude? I just don't understand why people feel the need to be rude in their responses.. Like, it makes them feel better for being arrogant or rude to others.. What is the point of this site if you have to watch EVERY spelling/typing error? The point, I assumed, was to get support from other people, NOT to get ridiculed!

I did not understand the reason for her post at all lol. I was hoping for some good responses because we are thinking of taking LO to the beach as well.
Someone has cleary hit the overly sensitive and bitchy stage of 3rd tri!! Sheesh, try and be more helpful and productive and less judgemental and arrogant. I'm so sure that everything you type is always PERFECT!
To the op. I'm sorry that people here are rude, arrogant, self righteous, rude fu*king bi*ches. It makes me sad for their unborn children. Yes honey, your mother is a mean person who likes being nasty to people for fun. Sorry your luck sucks.

Really?!?!? What the hell is wrong with some people online. So brave to be a big bi**h behind a computer. I really do not think that half of the rude women on these boards would dare to be so rude in person.
I frankly, welcome anyone to come and try and be that rude to my face.
But as for the beach! I hope to be going a lot myself! I was told to talk to the pediatrician about what sun screens are best. Pack a good blanket, sizable umbrella and snacks for yourself (especially if breast feeding...since it takes a lot of energy!) and of course your usual diaper bag. If you do not have a changing mat inside the diaper bag, it might be nice to have one since sand sticks well to blankets but on the shinny mats I see for diaper bags, I do not think it would stick as much.
I hope you go and enjoy the beach as much as you can with your little one!
I'm a FTM too, due May 4th, and I want to go to the beach as soon as possible too. I know that sun penetrates umbrellas and cabanas, that you can get burned in the shade. So I'm going to make sure I use sunscreen on the baby, even though it is considered harsh for them. I second asking the doctor what brand is recommended. I think putting a sunscreen on the baby that has chemicals in it is the lesser of the two evils, compared to risking their skin getting burned. I think as long as you pack a good bag of toys, wipes, bottles etc. the baby should be just fine! Oh, and maybe carry the baby in one of those Baby Bjorn thingies to make toting all the beach gear easier!
I second what some of the HELPFUL previous posters said. I live in Florida, so the beach is definitely on our to do list. Definitely check with your pediatrician about sun block before you go. Cover up those little noggins with a hat. And then anything else you think might make things more fun and comfortable for lo and yourself. I know a friend of mine takes her daughter in a breathable linin sling for comfort. Have fun with your baby!
Know that you won't be able to stay at the beach as long as normal, aside from the sun, babies get overheated and can't regulate their body temperature....the tents get hot!
ETA: Baby powder takes sand off very quickly so bring that. California Baby was approved by my pedi but he said to cover every possible spot with clothing and only use the sunblock where needed.
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
Wow, I can't believe how rude some of these posts are... this is a forum, not an english paper! To answer your question, we took DS to the beach for the first time when he was 10 weeks old and we had a little tent/umbrella to keep him cool and he sat in either my lap or his bouncy seat the whole time. They have great little tents at Walmart for like $20 and he's 2 now and still loves to play in it! (plus when it was time to BF him I just pulled my chair into the little tent with him and it was a little more private than whipping out the boob on the beach in front of everyone haha). Pedi said no sunscreen until he was at least 6 months old so he just wore a light onsie with swim shorts and a big hat and we kept him the shade the ENTIRE time! Have fun at the beach with your little one, i'm so excited to be on maternity leave during the summer this time around )

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I have seen some of your other replies and posts, and you are not the end all be all of grammar. If you can't pull your head out of your @$$long enough to contribute something useful to the OP's question, then don't contribute at all.
We live at the beach and several of my mom friends use these with their little ones when we are there. I have one on my registry. They fold up tiny so it's easy to just throw it in a bag and take with you. It takes them seriously less than two minutes to pop it open and set it up.
I brought DS when he was a few months old, I just brought him for like 2 hrs and he sat in his car seat! This year will be a little tricky with DS being 4, he will want to swim...so I'll need another adult with me!
English teacher here. To DragonflyBelly - go DIAF....have fun figuring out what that means =D
Haha! Yes! I love you!
DIAF FFS Dumb Ho! Totally made my day.
These are some seriously over the top venomnous responses to a very minor joke. Die in a Fire, Dumb Ho, Rude B*tch? Really? Lets be honest here, we all learn how to compose a proper sentence in what, second grade? Bad grammar is annoying and reflects poorly on you. The fact that it's a message board is a lame reason/excuse. There are some really b*tchy responses here, Dragonfly's is pretty tame compared to the rest of the name calling in a lot of these responses. Its not like anyone said the OP is a dumbass for repeatedly putting two periods at the end of a sentence.
We go to the beach every day in the summer Here's my list of must haves:
Some kind of tent...we bought a little Kid Cabana (search Babies R Us for it) but have since found this thing and it is quite frankly the best thing I have ever purchased: They discontinued them but you can sometimes find them on Craigslist or other places. It literally weighs like 4lbs. Also ,a stroller with huge wheels to cart you on and off the beach (the only ones I've found that go with ease are the BOB and the City Mini Elite). Other than that, just regular stuff you'd bring somewhere else. When they get bigger, a little $2 blow up pool for them to plop in that literally holds 2" of water, and I used a walker to put them in so they were upright, but couldn't move.
It doesn't matter! If I wanted to sit and overanalyze everything that I typed then I wouldn't have wasted my time writing on here at all! It's not like I spelled a ton of things wrong, and so WHAT if I did! I appreciate getting the help from the other girls on here. I am not a big name caller but I feel if you dish out some kind of rude response like that to a simple question then you deserve the ridicule right back!

This. We have one we used with DD and LOVED! It was super easy to set up and I felt like she was well protected from the sun, comfortable and it's airy too!

I agree and think it's great that you posted a response.
There is NOTHING positive about pointing out other people's flaws. Unless you are perfect and make zero mistakes you have no excuse. If incorrect grammar bothers you that much then sign off. Just looking at the daily posts I think we get enough negative comments/criticism from those closest to us. This is a place where we are able to reach out to other women who just might share our feelings/experiences...don't ruin it.

Not to be an annoying 'flaw pointer outer' but....
Can you please resize the photo in your signature. It's gigantic and takes up a ridiculous amount of space. Plus, I'm not sure I really need to see a lifesize pic of your DH everytime you make a post. Scaled down to an appropriate size, I'm sure it's a lovely wedding photo.
My mom works at a dermatologist office and says that the Burt's Bee's baby sunscreen I bought doesn't actually work. She says that the Dr. Always suggests Aveno, and it is supposed to be very gentle.

Agreed. Sometimes I feel like my mother must have an account on TB. She is guilty of this behavior which I why my husband and I choose not to speak with her anymore. It is ok to be polite.

Love this. We got this as a baby gift along with a beach blanket thing with heavy corners and it is really helpful.
