Craving chai...

I have been craving chai tea and I was finally able to find a decaf version.  It is black tea with spices like cinnamon, clove and allspice - the only thing in it that I haven't heard of before is "cardamom oil".  Does anyone know what this is/if it is safe during pregnancy?  I have found a million differing opinions on it on the net... TIA!!!

  • Thanks so much for your suggestion!!  Being that it's Sunday, my doctor is not open today, just thought I'd run it by you girls first... no need to reply if you don't know, just seeing if anyone had heard of it before.
  • welp...i haven't heard of it, but i drink chai tea a couple of times a week and so far my baby is still human and only has two arms and four legs. no worries! :)
  • I drink black or green tea (reg, not decaf) daily, and chai 4 or 5 times a week.  Did the same with DD (who's now almost 2 and the smarted, cutest, most well-behaved kid I know), so I wouldn't worry too much.

Then again, the only things I really changed about my diet were cutting back on alcohol (still have a glass of wine every 2 weeks or so) and no sushi (Ok, I cheated on that once).  I think it's more important to just eat healthfully overall than to worry about every little thing.

  • I read that it will cause gas but nothing about harming a fetus. I'd drink it Yes but that's just me lol
  • I drink regular chai latte's almost every day from the coffee shop at my building and everything's good for me so far.  Yet I don't worry too much about the caffeine I have a few caffeinated drinks a week and don't worry about it.

  • Cardamom is fine and in a lot of Indian cooking (some Chinese, and some southeast Asian cooking), it's a relative of ginger.

You can make your own chai milk (without tea) at home with 4 cups any kind of milk, 4 cinnamon sticks, 10 or so cardamom pods, 2 tsp cloves, ginger, 6 star anise, and a few black peppercorns (play with the amounts to your taste).  Simmer ingredients for 10 minutes and sugar or sweetener to your taste (I use agave or honey).  You can save it in the fridge for later.  The spices are really cheap at an Indian grocery or middle eastern grocery.

  • TY everyone!!!  I just might have a cup tonight before bed :)  I appreciate all of your input and suggestions.
