Help with health insurance question...esp if you have an individual plan

How much do you pay for your non work individual plan?

I have insurance free through my work. If I add DD and DH the cost is between $550-625 depending on the plan. This is $$$$$, IMO!

The coverage is ok at my work: for the 70/30 for $550 a month:

$977 ind. deductable

$35 office visit primary

$81 specialist

$85 urgent care

ER- $291 PLUS 30% of total bill!!! OUCH

Currently DH and DD have a high deductable individual plan. It is $300 a month and has a $2500 individual deductable. We were already burned once by the high deductable with DD's ear tubes, but since then she has been healthy.

copayments are better $25 primary, $50 specialist, urgent care is $50, ER is $150..

So finally the question- would you pay an extra $200 a month for a lower deductable, higher copay plan??

Re: Help with health insurance question...esp if you have an individual plan

  • We pay right around $400 a month for our family insurance. We have $1500 ded and $15 co pay for drs visits.

We lowered our ded from $3000- 1500 in the past year . ( I think it was right around 10 more a week) The biggest thing you would have to figure out is does paying the $200 more a month equal more or less that what you would be saving on your ded.

  • We went from having a fabulous BCBS plan (LOW deductible- like $500 and about $500/month for the family)... to a HIGH deductible group plan for DH's sales position (5k deductible/10k max out of pocket 80/20 after the deductible is met) for about $260/month.

This normally is totally fine, since we luckily don't go to the dr much... but with LO#2 on the way, we will totally hit the deductible and work towards the max out of pocket.... ugh!

You really need to talk to a broker in your State because there are so many variables here. We paid $770 for a family of 3 with maternity coverage (and almost all individual plans, if they even offer a maternity rider, require a 12 month wait period to deliver), we had a high deductible plan as well.

  • I deal with ins at the hospital I work in and if you can afford to pay $200 more then you should. Also, is there an option for you to change plans with a better coinsurance? 70/30 is a lot and I have seen much better coins with different plans. Who is the provider?
