They definitely work, just get a reputable brand (Everyone always mentions Inspired by Finn) to be sure it's real. We notice when DD isn't wearing hers. She's got two teeth, and it hasn't been bad at all.
I think they are worth it. I was a little hesitant about it, but after doing some research I decided to give it a shot, and I do think it does make a difference in my LO's mood.

I read from somewhere that the only way to find out is to burn it and the thread should burn up but not the amber... super helpful! I'd say just don't get a cheapie from Ebay and stick with well-reviewed brands.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that it should be Baltic Amber and the lighter, opaque color is most effective. And unpolished is even better.
Ditto to all of this. I definitely notice when I forget to put her necklace back on after her bath. I got mine from Inspired by Finn when they were having a sale on babysteals.com . I think I only spent $17 or so on it. Worth every penny.

Ruby Mirabelle born July 9 at 10:56pm!
Married 05/30/09 & TTC ever since
Clomid only for 5 cycles
IUI #1: 06/07/10 BFN
IUI#2: 08/19/10 BFN
IVF #1 started 10/07/10, ER 10/17/10 6 retrieved/6 fertilized, ET on day 5 10/22/10... Beta #1 on 11/5/10: 680!!!, Beta #2 on 11/8/10: 2337!!!, U/S 11/18/10 Got to see the tiny beating heart! What a blessing!
12/2/10 U/S HB 176 & I'm released!
I definitely notice a difference. I got Scarlett's from
https://www.viavaleron.com/ ... even if you don't order from them, they have a section of their website on how to tell if what you're getting is the real deal or not. I found it on babysteals for half price, so even better!
ETA: I got the unpolished baltic amber, too, for the reason mentioned above.
Also - regarding choking. You should get a size short enough that it's not dangling very far down the child's chest. Also, via valeron puts a knot in between every single bead so that if it does break hopefully only one bead comes loose. They also make their beads small enough that it should pose less of a choking hazard. And the clasp is designed to force open with enough force applied, so less of a risk of strangulation that way. Honestly, Scarlett doesn't even notice hers most of the time. It hangs down inside her onesie and only during really rough playtime does it flop against her skin and she's reached up to check. But, I just say "uh uh leave your necklace alone" and she smiles and goes back to what she was doing before.

Thanks ladies! And, thanks TImshel for the recommendation. I'll check them out.

I was wondering the same thing. I recently read this article by Dr. Andrew Weil and decided against getting one:
