Cell Phones

I know this is super early to be thinking about this, but do you plan on letting your LO have a cell phone at some point? If so, what age would you let them have one?

I think I would be open to letting my kid have one of the ones that only calls like three numbers when they start kindergarten.

Re: Cell Phones

  • Uh yeah not going to happen in Kindergarten. When they're old enough to start having after school activities that I'm not always there for, then yes, they will get one that is limited. And there will be rules. Like if I call they MUST pick up the phone. It will be so they can get a hold of ME or DH anytime they need us.

  • Kindergarten?!?!?!? Seriously? Why in the world?!

I say as soon as they start staying after school for sports is the absolute earliest.

LOL... that cracks me up. But seriously, at 5 years old, when will the ever be with someone that doesn't have a cell phone? Parents, grandparents, babysitter etc... ya know?

  • I hate to even think about this. I got my first one when I graduated college at 22. None of my friends at JMU had one that I can remember. A few had pagers. That was in 2000. I suppose that I agree with PP about considering when they start afterschool activities.

  • I would say not for a long time but with all the school shootings and craziness that is going on....  It makes me think maybe sooner than later.

  • I say when they get their full license and are able to take the car out on their own. And none of this crazy stuff with racking up the bill on who knows what... although, in 16 years phones are probably going to have all kinds of crazy new features. AND, if he (or they) ever get their phone taken away at school (I teach there lol) then they will be dead meat! ;)

  • Right now we are not planning till high school, however since kids are getting them earlier and earlier I may change that.  I don't want her to be the only kid in her class without one, especially since I think the schools are going to be allowing them before our LO's are in middle school.

  • I vote when they have after school activities aswell. I started lots of after school activities around junior high, although I didn't have a cell phone until I was 17?

  • My take on this is different. I will get her the Firefly one that only allows her to call Mom, Dad, or 911 once she's in kindergarten. I think it will be an invaluable tool if she ever gets lost (GPS tracking).

  • I think around 13 or 14, but not for texting her friends like crazy - for letting me know where she is and being able to call me to come get her.

^^ This is what I was thinking too. I think Kindergarten is too soon, but to each their own.

  • I am not sure. I agree with sports/activities, but I was swimming when I was 7, and a 7 year old with a cell phone is probably ridiculous as well. I think as it stands now, we will just play it by ear, and when it seems necessary/appropriate, then she'll have one. But a basic one, not some fancy one that she'll spend every waking minute playing with.
