Toy guns?

What are your thoughts and beliefs one them? Will you let LO play with them or they completely banned? Are you going to allow water guns/nerf guns? If you allow them are you going to have any rules with it?

I have no problem with toy guns what so ever. I would let my kids play with them for sure.

  • I don't mind them at all, her daddy is going to be a police officer and there is a TON of hunting around here (not that H hunts) so it's such a normal thing here. That being said, like with my niece... there will be no pointing guns at people, ever.
  • Good question. I am not a huge fan of the "real" type ones, I am not too concerned about nerf guns and water guns are fun, but I'd really have to discuss with DH truly to see his views... considering as he plays COD on occasion, I don't think he has strong views against such things, but I would hope within reason for the age of the child. Good topic of discussion for dinner tonight! Big Smile

  • We are gun people, they see touch, & learn about real guns. My 4 year olds been helping J clean his for a few years now even. They are expected to treat their toy guns the same as they would a real gun, with the exception of squirt guns.

Children who arent educated from the start about guns & gun safety are the ones who end up shooting someone or get shot by accident. Not letting kids play with toy guns just makes real ones that much more exciting, that is dangerous.

  • I dont love the realistic ones, but think the nerf and water ones are fun. With that being said I don't like the pointed at people or cars ever. I have a neighbor that comes in our yard often and "shoots" the cars going by. I think I just get annoyed because "guns" aren't allowed at school and as a teacher I was constantly redirecting kids to play a different game.

I find that a really interesting perspective, because I live in Canada and while of course there are guns here, and of course people hunt, I, and most people I know have never been around guns, had family members who owned guns etc. because here, you are only allowed to own them for hunting purposes. Otherwise, they are illegal, so if your family doesn't hunt, you are kind of out of the loop, and in my whole life (yes, even in the great White North lol) I have only known 3 people that I can think of who hunt and own their own rifles. But what you said makes perfect sense if that is what you are exposed to.

I had no idea that you couldnt own guns in Canada unless you hunted, that makes me glad I dont live there LOL. J hunts, has his concealed carry, & has family who collects. I dont hunt but am about to go through all the courses & get my concealed carry too even though Ill most likely never use it.

Elections coming & some of our candidates dont seem to respect the constitution so I want to get it before then. So what do you do up there for protection?

Nothing, no one I know carries anything for protection, no knives etc. Mace and pepper spray are illegal too.... just looked this up for my own interest <clicky>

  • Gun people here too.  Our rule when I was growing was no toy guns that looked real and I think we'll do that with DS and future kids as well.  DH is a huge hunter, so if it interests DS, he'll have plenty of opportunity to learn about real guns (obviously he is going to learn gun safety whether he has an interest or not).

  • We are also a family that's big on hunting and we own several guns which are all safely away in a gun safe. DH and I will allow DS to play with toy guns and water guns. We will eventually teach him how to use a real one when he's old enough and legally allowed to hunt. My DH and I were both taught by our fathers when we were kids about gun safety and how to respect them and I think it's important to teach DS that too.

Curiosity got the best of me, your populations a lot lower than ours is too, so I bet that has a lot to do with it also.

Ya I was wondering about that too, because we are very sparsely populated in many parts of the country, to the point of no one living in many parts, despite how large of a land mass we have. Looks like you guys have ~10x more people and about ~90x the murders by firearms, so those 10x extra people must do about 9x more shooting lol... sorry, math nerd. Wink

  • I have no problem with them.  I think it's a little ridiculous that people make such a big deal over a little kid with a plastic gun.
