I was diagnosed early because diabetes runs in my family (10 weeks). I was a finicky eater before and now with all the restrictions I find myself in tears sometimes when it comes to eating. I actually smelled my husbands soda the other day.
I am now on insulin which they keep changing and glyburide. The docs say I am doing everything right this is just pregnancy but I feel like prisoner when it comes to eating. They said they want me to eat more calories once I get to my 3rd trimester ( I am 21 weeks now) but I know there is no way unless I start eating food I hate. OK yes maybe I sound like a bit like a stubborn 2 year old but I am trying and failing. I thought pregnancy was supposed to be a happy time but I am miserable.
I will accept advice, suggestions or virtual hugs - Thanks in advance
Re: Gestational Diabetes - (*** and moan) Help please
Hi and here is a virtual *hug*
Eating is hard enough when pregnant and having so many restrictions can probably seem impossible. When I couldn't eat and nothing sounded even remotely interesting, I searched and searched the internet for eating plans, menus and healthy diets (not the weight loss kind) ad I wrote down any and all items that sounded good. If you go to this link and scroll down a bit you'll see lots of eating plans and idea links on the right. Good luck to you!

Try walking after you eat - this may help you eat stuff you like.
Ditto the walking after eating! I had GD with my first pregnancy, and I expect to get it this time as well. I failed my 1hr glucose test, but managed to pass the 3hr with flying colors by walking in between blood draws...When I had it with #1 I went out and bought books about Type 2 diabetes, to learn some eating guidelines, and get some ideas. Biggies were switching to whole grains, and counting carbs. If you have a carb heavy meal, make sure you have protein and fiber in it too. protein makes it take longer for the carbs to metablize into glucose in your blood, and whole grain type fiber actually helps prevent the body from absorbing some carbs. I learned that from DH who's taking a nurtrition class this semester, pretty cool huh? oh and get out and walk right after eating, it helps your body produce it's own insulin.
What do you like to eat? Maybe I can help with ideas?
I felt the same way and I was able to control it through diet...until now. Lately my numbers have been slightly elevated and my dr. told me that even if I do everything right (diet, exercise), our bodies can still change and react later in pregnancy. If my numbers don't improve, I may need to be put on insulin.
I agree with what other ppl have said: walking after a meal, other forms of exercise, and plenty of water. good luck.
