We hate doing taxes and in the past have used turbo tax but even that has gotten frustrating so we are considering using hr block. Anyone ever use them? Any other place that might be better?
We've done both. We have a house, kid, student loans, deferred comp, etc, so it's not a cake walk- but then it's not overly complicated either. Turbo Tax is about $60 after all the fees and whatnot. HR Block was $220 for us. We won't use either this year. We found a local neighborhood joint that charges a flat fee of $80. A friend recommended, so I feel comfortable using her. Turbo Tax really screwed us one year- we unded up with a $4000 rebate that we later (2 years later!) found out was given improperly (TT said we qualified for a certain huge tax credit which in fact we did not). TT paid the tax penalty, but we still owed the liability. HR Block was good and very thorough- but overpriced, imho. DH usually does our taxes but every once in awhile he likes to check in with a professional to see what's new and make sure we don't miss anything. This year we additionally had a re-fi and DH took money from his 401K so we wanted to make sure we hit our bases.
I know Turbo tax can be frustrating, but I would keep trying/try to contact someone through there that can help you before going to HR Block. I have had 2 very bad experiences with them; and they are expensive for the quality of work they do.
We normally use TT, but 2 years ago we had a ton of confusing stuff (relocation package, 2 states) and HRB had our stuff reviewed by 4 different people, kept giving us the runaround and still said "we 'think' this is right". HUH? Anyways, if you still can't figure it out using TT, I would look around for a small company to do it.
Depending on your income, if you go to irs.gov and click on the free file link, it will take you to a bunch of IRS approved sites that you can file your federal return for free.
Also, I go through and have it figure my state refund/owe and then go to my state tax site and they also have a free file that take a little more work, I just double check to make sure the amount matches what the free file site would be.
We are self employed, have an LLC, and some 1099 income. HR Block was going to charge us over $600 because of all the forms we need to file. Turbo tax, when all said and done for the business, personal and self-employed was just over $200, and my DH could handle it without too much hassle.
