Measuring small?

Hi all,

I just had my monthly appointment and was flying high: I passed the 1 hour glucose test, I'm one of those rare ones who isn't anemic, and they praised me on how well I've kept the weight gain under control. I was measured and the doc said I'm measuring about a week to a week and a half too small, and wants to do an ultrasound to check on the baby's growth. She said not to worry but of course I am anyway. Does anyone have experience with measuring too small? What came of it? Thanks....

Re: Measuring small?

  • I was told this too but then at my last u/s at 30 weeks she said he was just fine.  I was even told I am measuring a week ahead. He doesnt weight a lot but apparently is very long.

  • My stupid doctor told me this at 35 weeks and it stressed me out to the max! Went for my ultrasound, the nurse acted dumb and clueless like she couldnt tell me anything, but i saw on the screen that he was weighing normally (5.12 lbs). Still had to wait a week to get the official results from my OB, and when i asked him he sounded like he was just guessing how big the baby was and said he was 'probably' about 4 lbs. BULLSH!T. I cannot stand my doctor and his hot/cold attitude towards me. But its too late for me to change doctors i think. He always is soo rushed when it comes to my appointments, never asks me if i ever have any questions and makes me feel like ive done something wrong and just wants to avoid me.
  • I had the same thing happen. At my u/s she measured in the 97th percentile, so she's big. Now I have a "large for gestational age fetus". My fundal height is still measuring small (about 2 weeks behind), but as long as it doesn't get any further behind, they aren't worried. Clearly she's getting what she needs!
  • At my 19 week u/s, I was told the same thing, she was small, but not to worry. Now at 32 weeks, she is right on track, so no need to worry! They all have growth spurts at different times.

  • I wouldnt stress about it. same as pp said they go through their own growth spurts :)
  • My sister measured small with both of her girls all the way to the end- her belly never measured more than 36wks.  Both girls were born healthy and weighing 7 and a half pounds!

    Good luck at ultrasound!

  • Even though I've been measuring right where I should be, a few weeks back they had me come in to see the high risk OB b/c LO's abdomen was measuring small. They were concerned about his growth but then determined that he's perfectly fine, just slightly under the "normal" range, but not in the "small" range either. My husband jokes that LO must have my waistline!

Bottom line, try not to stress too much. Easier said than done, I know. But chances are everything will turn out just fine. GL!

  • I always measured small with my daughter and had lots of u/s to check growth. She would always be measuring fine and they would say "hmmmm, where is she hiding in there"

I'm sure everything is fine, they just have to be cautious. GL!

This.  Two weeks ago, I was told I was measuring big, I had an U/S last week that showed DD weighed about 6 pounds, 10 ounces - which puts her in the 50% percentile - she cannot possibly be more average.

Even if you are measuring small, that could mean a)nothing at all, b)you'll have the easiest labor in the world or c)they may have been wrong about your due date.  None of which is a reason to worry.

  • I measured a week or so behind with my first one toward the end, and as well with this one...I really dont think there is anymore room left inside for her to grow!

I have measured 2-3 weeks (cm) behind since around 32 weeks. The growth u/s I had the first time came out perfect (near 50th percentile) and I am having one again this Friday. I am wondering if it is just the way the baby is sitting in there?

  • Right around week 35 with DD#1, they said I was measuring small. They did an ultrasound at the next appt (which is just mean to do to a very pregnant lady) and the tech estimated that she would end up at 7 lbs +/- .5 lbs.. she was 7 lbs 6 ounces and perfect! Try not to worry.  :)

This is exactly what's going on with me. I was told it's the position of the baby, and my Dr is not at all worried.

  • I measured small my whole pregnancy. Up to 5-6 weeks behind. I was sent for growth ultrasounds a few times to make sure it wasn't related to the baby and that she was still growing well. My growth scans always came back great, LO always measured on target or ahead.

  • This is my first pregnancy where I'm measuring large. I just had an ultra sound and the baby is measuring perfect. Fluid level is perfect. My stomach is just large lol. And I've gained the least amount of weight with this pregnancy. Try not to stress about it. My first was born at 41 weeks and only weighed 6lbs12oz. He was just a small baby. At 5, he's off the charts in height and weight :)

  • thanks everyone. luckily, the ultrasound is Thursday morning, and I'm trying not to worry about it, and look at it as another chance to see her. :)

  • I always measured almost exactly two weeks small with dd#1 and she was perfectly healthy, just small. Born 4 days before dd at 6lbs 3oz. I am measuring the same this time, so expecting the same, another peanut. It is just an estimate so it usually doesnt mean anything is wrong unless you measure - or + 4 weeks.

  • I am just lurking on this board, but I was told by my OB that my baby would be no more than 6 pounds and that I was measuring very small. The ultrasound showed differently. In the end, I delivered my son at 38 weeks and he was 8 pounds. I would not worry about it, but that is easier said than done! : )
  • I had the same thing happen today. I'm 38 weeks 2 days, and they said I'm measuring small (every other time they've said 'perfect').  I had to do the ultrasound which measured him at 6 lbs today with lower (than they'd like) amniotic fluid levels.  So I have to go back in tomorrow for another ultrasound after drinking a ton of water today.

  • I never measured more than 36 weeks with dd and she was a week late weighing 7lbs. This time I'm measuring at 27 weeks when I'm 32 weeks. I get an ultrasound next week to check on baby but I'm not worried since I was so far behind with dd. Each body/baby is different so I wouldn't stress too much and enjoy the ultrasound!

  • Especially is you're tall and haven't gained a ton of weight you wind up measure "small". I'm measuring 3 weeks "small" but my u/s confirmed that my baby is totally in the healthy growth range and that all her organs are developing perfectly. There just has to be an "average" to huge everyone against which is ridiculous since our bodies are never all the same at any other points in life! Don't worrrrrry!
  • At today's u/s he measured 7lbs and the tech said the fluid levels were fine.  So unless he gained a pound overnight...which if that's the case I might be looking at an 18 pounder.
