I need help.
DS could not handle losing the swaddle cold turkey so we currently have one arm out.
Naps have been a struggle in our house. We had a few weeks where they were getting better but they have been short again for a week now. When DS wakes up at that critical point, he's now rubbing his face with his free hand, waking himself completely up, crying and not able to go back to sleep. Replacing his paci and shhh'ing is no longer working, I've had to pick him up and rock him to extend his nap.
I'm scared of starting a bad habit and that it will translate into his nighttime sleep too. I don't know if I should continue to lengthen naps by doing this or if I should just try soothing him in the crib and end the nap if it doesn't work. WWYD?
Re: Come in if you have weaned from the swaddle
We tried a bunch of things to ween- but the only thing that helped us is stomach sleeping. We didn't do it until about 6 1/2 months and until DS could roll all over and around and lift his head, etc. At daycare in the crib they put him on his back and he rolls to his stomach to sleep. So at home I just put him on his stomach and he sleeps no problem now.
Maybe give it a shot during a nap and see how he does?
We weaned from the swaddle to Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. It saved us! Google it.
I've already considered it. I decided I don't want to have to wean him from yet another sleep aid!
True. However, she's been using it since Christmas and I don't think this will be nearly as difficult to wean as the swaddle since it offers some arm control.
We are now weaning from the Sleep Suit, and while it has not been a walk in the park (the new joys of rolling all around the crib) it has not been NEARLY as bad as quitting the swaddle. Try the sleep suit, only thing is, they only make up to 6-9 months, and depending on your LO, they could not last that long, DS was getting more snug lately. The alternative is to just keep doing what you're doing and hope that in a week or two LO gets used to the freedom, or offer a lovey - when we started with 1 arm out for naps, I used to put a bunny on his crazy arm, then once we went to two arms out I switched the bunny because the other arm had calmed down. Alternatively, as a last resort, you could CIO - if you are comfortable with that. GL!!
We weaned cold turkey because I felt the same way. My LO was just like yours when we left 1 arm out. Once we got the guts to take both arms out, it took 1 crappy day. No big deal for us. LO was actually much happier and started sleeping on her side immediately.
I know I'm probably the minority, but I hope DS finds himself sleeping on his stomach and that it goes well. I think in our case though, it will have to be him that discovers that sleeping position. I think if I put him down on his stomach in his crib, he'll play for a few minutes with his sheet then get mad. He does TT a lot, but never puts his head down on the floor so I don't think he would do it in his crib.
You bring up another good point. I don't think the sizes would work. DS is not a peanut and measures quite long.
I hear ya- I was so stressed about how we were going to ween from the swaddle. I ordered the Magic Sleep Suit which did not work for us and I ended up returning. I was talking to his teachers at daycare who told me that they put him down on his back and he rolls over to his tummy and sleeps great in that position (they do not swaddle at daycare of course) So it just ended up working for us. Good Luck! I know it's stressful.
