Help me with BLW poo in CDs!

We've been doing BLW with DD since she was 6 months (she was EBF before). In the past 2-3 months, she's really gotten the hang of it and is eating quite a bit for breakfast, lunch and dinner - so her poo has definitely changed, but it's nowhere near "ploppable." It's basically just as runny as EBF poo, but stinky and filled with bits of half-digested food. Getting it off the CD into the toilet is a holy mess, so I'm looking for some help!

We're currently doing dunk and swish and don't have a diaper sprayer - are they really helpful for the early solids poo?

How long did it take your LOs solids poos to become ploppable?

She still nurses at least 4-5 times/day and 3-4 times/overnight - we aren't planning to wean until 2 or later, but I'm considering attempting to nightwean in another month or so. Do their poos stay runny until they start nursing less?

  • Definitely a sprayer...DS2s poop isn't really plopable yet and hes on almost 100% table foods.  I did the swish and scrape method for a while but then caved and made a homemade diaper sprayer (not really that much less expensive than buying one in the end) and it makes it exponentially easier.  I let it soak in the toilet for less than a minute then spray the bits off.  I can't really tell you how long it will be until your LOs poop is plopable but as long as you are bfing my guess is that it will be pastey at best.

Ditto pretty much all of this. We are doing spoon-fed weaning, so more purees, and we have had maybe 3 ploppable poos (those were GLORIOUS), but for the most part, our sprayer has been a sanity-saver (DH made it, didn't save much money but it works really well).

  • I scraped with toilet paper or a plastic utensil for 3 weeks before they became ploppable. She was still nursing probably 7-8 times/day at that point, but she was, and still is, a big eater.

  • I couldn't do it without the sprayer. We do use disposable liners, but it only helps a bit. The poos are just so very gross, and have been since we started BLW.
  • SPRAYER!! It will change your CDIng life. My son is 18 months and still doesn't always have ploppable poops.

DS is nursing less (morning/night only) and with his increased intake of solid food, we are getting ploppable more often but we also try to give him tons of fruits/veggies, so it's often not that solid.

  • We just use a plastic knife to scrape off most of the poo and then swish. No staining or stink issues yet. It took about a month to a month and a half to get ploppable poo. Right now we're getting into normal people poo that isn't like rabbit pellets. The constipation was brutal.

  • My son is still breastfed at 20 months, he is only nursing 1-2 times a day now.. and his poops have never been ploppable.

We started BLW at 6 months as well, got a sprayer ASAP. Couldn't imagine life without one right now.

Trust me, you won't regret a sprayer!  It is wonderful!  I don't think the amount of nursing makes a difference.  DD nurse every 2 hours at night until around 11 months and her poo was ploppable around 9 or 10 months.  It became more ploppable when she started eating a lot of food.

  • We are in the same position and are using a scraper and liners.

  • You must buy a diaper sprayer!  We started  BLW at 7 mos (LO was premature, so we waited for him to catch up).  He STILL has poop that needs spraying often.  It's ploppable maybe half the of time.  It's been 5 months.  LO eats 3 solid meals, a couple of snacks, and nurses 4-5 times a day.  HTH!

  • Get a diaper sprayer.  It makes everything easy peasy.
