Do/did you use regular laundry detergent to wash your baby's clothes, or special baby detergent? I've heard the special baby detergent is unnecessary, but wanted some input from those with experience.
I use All or Arm & Hammer Free & Clear and we haven't had any problems. You don't really need to get Dreft or a special detergent.

I have used Tide Free and Clear with my first 2. I never felt the need to spend extra on a 'special' detergent. I also love Baby Oxyclean for stains. It works great for us.
I used dreft both times for the first year of life, then ALL.
Turned out my daughter had horrible skin problems so at 6 the doctor put her back on dreft and special bath soap and no scented lotions etc... It was a pain in the butt, but it helped her a lot! It has been 13 years since my baby was a baby so I may be a bit out of touch tho.
Wow, this is an eye opener for me! I am glad I read this. I feel like my head has been stuck in the sand! I am going to have to get some of this stuff! I have always just used standard or "sensitive" arm & hammer since my DD was a baby. She is now 12 years old & I never noticed any problems. I have even used costco brand detergent on occasion. I also always use costco brand dryer sheets. I never knew this could even really be an issue?! I am thinking I should now start to re- wash all the baby clothing, oh no! Really? Does this "free/clear" make a huge difference? No dryer sheets? Doesn't that make the clothing feel stiff?

I used the Free & Clear for a long time on DD's clothes, but once I realized she was coming in contact with my clothes just as much as she was her own (her arms and legs) and there was no reaction, I figured I'd just start using the same thing we were using. For this baby, I've been using one of the Arm & Hammer sensitive skin detergents. It has a very light scent, but it's for sensitive skin so I'm not worried about it.
We use All Free & Clear on all of our clothes. We've been washing DD's clothes with ours since before she was born and will do the same with this baby too. No need to buy Dreft or do separate loads of laundry.

No, I've never noticed a difference! If you want, you can add some plain vinegar to your wash (where the fabric softener would normally go) and it will naturally soften your clothes. It also has the added bonus of disinfecting everything too.

I just use free clear either all or tide whichever is cheaper. Funny thing is some babies skin is so sensitive dreft will irritate also like babyganics lately it goes on sale babiesrus b1g1 all the time.
At first I used All free and clear and then when dd was 3 months I just used what we used. I dont think it would have mattered but every baby is different and you dont know how they will react to the detergent.
I've been using Dreft and no dryer sheets for the kids' clothes, but once this bottle of it is gone, I'm switching over to Tide Free & Gentle for all of our clothes. I will also be using Bounce Free dryer sheets. I discovered and used these products while visiting my sister out-of-state (she's been using it for years with her kids). Our clothes came out nice and clean and oh-so-soft.

We use Seventh Generation Free & Clear that you can get at Target. Love this detergent as I don't have to use a whole bunch to get clothes clean and it seems to be great for anyone with sensitive skin. We actually switched because DH was having a reaction to Tide and All and haven't had any problems since switching. GL!

A scent-free should be fine. However, I splurge on Dreft because I love that "baby" smell. I stopped using for a few weeks and DD at the time just about 2 started smelling like a normal person and I didn't like it Crazy or creepy, so be it. Now that DS will be here soon, I'll likely use the baby detergent for a few more years.
We started with a small bottle of Dreft but when that was gone, we used whatever we used for our own clothes. DD didn't have any reaction so we plan to do the same with this baby. If a reaction occurs, we'll switch to something fragrance/dye free but otherwise we'll stick with our plan.
FWIW, my SIL swears by Baby All. She has 3 kids - from 2 mos to 5 yrs - and she uses Baby All for all of their clothes.
Us too. I figure if it's not broke, don't fix it. As soon as I notice any type of skin irritation, reaction, etc. than I will absolutely make a switch, but our little one is a year and a half, we never shelled out the big bucks for Dreft and never had any problems.
It's my hypothesis that a lot of these products are perfect and exactly what is needed for about 10% of the population but then marketed as if 100% of the population absolutely needs them.

I use rockin' green detergent. It is safe for the environment and really gentle on baby's skin. I use it on all DS's clothes and on his cloth diapers too.

We use non-scented hypoallergenic detergent (whatever's on sale) for all of our clothes. Regular detergent makes all three of us break out!
Oh and absolutely no fabric softener or dryer sheets -- they're terrible for you anyway!

Didn't use that before DS but it's silly to have 2 detergents and it works well, so we've stayed with it.
My eldest has very sensitive skin the pediatrician switched him for Dreft to All Free & clear when he was an infant.
So with my DD I used All Free & Clear and bounce free & clear dryer sheets.
