dumb sleep questions

so we just got lo in his crib. i've been cosleeping and i have some questions for this new sleeping arrangement. i feel like they may sound dumb but here goes...i appreciate your replies!

1. what do you dress your lo in for night sleep? the room temp hovers around 68 degrees if that helps.

2. how can you tell if he/she is too hot or cold?

3. what have you done for night wakings? he still eats once or twice a night but i'd like to dial that down. do you just treat it like the beginning of the night and CIO (assuming he's not hot/cold/wet/dirty/hungry/etc)?

4. what about noise? do you shut their door? go on about your business throughout the house? I feel like i'm tiptoeing. Sound machines?

okay i think that's it. sorry if this seems like it should've been asked on the 0-3 or 3-6 board. but this arrangement is all new to me! thanks!

Re: dumb sleep questions

  • 1. Generally just a cotton sleeper. DD's room is probably around 68 also. She does tend to be warmer than the average baby, and dislikes being too warm.

    2. She will let us know if she is too hot because she hates it. I worry about the too cold thing myself, but I figure she would let me know that too. She seems okay and she feels okay.

    3. She doesn't wake a lot during the night, so when she does she usually needs something. Last night, she woke at 2:30, and DH wanted to just let her CIO but I thought she was hungry. She was, and fell right back to sleep. But I guess if everything else was fine, yeah I would probably treat it like the beginning of the night (we did have to do this a few times when she first went to her crib)

    4. Door is always closed, and we do whatever else we need to do throughout the house. We do have a white noise machine.

Good luck! I will say, we did the crib transition late too, and it honestly went much, much smoother than I thought it would.

  • Nick starts off in his room and then comes into our bed.

His room is always insanely cold so we leave the door open.

I have him wear feety pjs and sometimes his sleeping bag (sleep sack) I also put a blanket on him (gasp bad mom I know)

I put a nightlight in there

As for sleeping through the night I dont think kids do that. Neither of my kids do that.

  • 1.  Its cold here so DS sleeps in a short sleeve onesie, socks, a lightweight sleeper, and a sleep sack.  As it warms up we will shed layers.

    2.  I feel the back of his neck to determine his temp.  His hands and feet are almost always cold no matter what he is wearing.

    3.  Up until recently we were getting up each time DS woke, but we have really started sleep training so now we let him fuss for 15 minutes if he wakes up in the night.  Usually he will go back to sleep.  If not we get up and comfort him if its been less than 6 hours, or I feed him if it has been more.  If you are looking to increase feedings I would just start making him go 30 minutes longer each night until you are at the point you are comfortable with.

    4.  We leave his door cracked and go about our business.  With a preschooler in the house he is used to sleeping through noise.  I personally don't like sound machines because then they can become dependent on them and if you travel you have to take them along.

Not a dumb question! Now that the weather is getting warmer, I am wondering what do dress LO in, too.

    1. Long-sleeve onesie, fleece sleeper, cottonsleep sack. Our house is 68 at night, too.

    2. I assume she is fine, since I think she would wake us if she's uncomfortable, which she doesn't.

    3. At first, I would push her eating time back. So, if she woke up before the set time, we would soothe her back to sleep without feeding her. We did CIO after she started waking again after STTN for a couple weeks, since we knew she didn't need to eat.

    4. We leave the door open a crack and have white noise on at night. We don't use white noise during the day. Our house is pretty quiet during the day though.

  • thanks ladies! while cosleeping i never worried about him being cold because he had me as a heater! he basically slept with a onesie on and i covered him up with a blanket. now this is all different. tonight will make night 5 and it's going really well! last night he cried for 2 minutes and was out like a light.

so i was going to give it a week or so to get used to just being in his crib then i'm going to start spreading out the feedings and hopefully reduce some of these wakings.

    appreciate your replies!

  •  LO's room is right adjacent to ours, so its kinda like he's still in our room. We keep the door open b/c the central air does not go to his room, so I get worried about the temp. I guess we are weird, b/c we always keep our apt at 74 degrees. His room never gets colder than 69 at night. We have a space heater in there if it gets any colder than that.   He sleeps in a long sleeve footed pjs and a fleecy sleep sack. If its really warm then we will skip the sleepsack. They say that you are supposed to feel the neck to see if its cold.  We havent really let him CIO- I usually go in and give him a pacifier and he usually goes back to sleep instantly, unless he is hungry- then I feed him.

  • 1. Onesie, footed fleece sleeper and a sleepsack. Her room has a big window so it's a bit cold.

    2. I feel behind her neck. If she's hot her cheeks get red.

    3. I still feed her. I don't have the heart to let a hungry baby cry just yet. Also, I have a good routine I don't want to screw with. Bottle, rock bed at 7. She either sleeps all night or is up between 3 and midnight for a bottle. She's back to bed in 10 minutes after bottle and up at 7. I don't see the big deal. As for other things, I guess I don't know. I'm one of the lucky ones TBH. My kid doesn't really randomly wake.

    4. Her room is right off the kitchen so I shut it why we're still up. I open it when we go to bed so I can hear her. I think it's good she sleeps through some noise.

  • 1) it depends on the kid. Our house is cooler (around 60) but DD is a hot box so she always slept in a onesie (long sleeves in winter, short in summer) DS on the other hand gets cold extremities fast so we make a point to have as much of him covered as possible, so he wears footed sleepers.

    2) touch their inner thigh/chest(near the heart) if its cool they're cold. Hands and feet in young children will normally cool when lying down, the trunk will be a true test of warmth.

    3) DS usually doesn't wake but on the rare occasion he does. We wait a little to see if he's just "talking." If he continues we go in pat his back and turn on his crib aquarium. If he persists and isn't hungry we let him CIO

    4) Both children sleep with shut doors. DD has classical music and a FP Seahorse. DS had a crib aquarium that plays white noise. I am a little quieter but for the most part I just go about my business.
