M&M and Other Nurse Mamas

Quick question: How contagious is MSRA? Would you take your baby to go visit someone with it?

Re: M&M and Other Nurse Mamas

  • I'm not a nurse, but we had the same question with DD. My grandmother has MRSA, and we asked the pedi when DD was about 2 months if/when she could visit. The pedi said as long as grandma and DD had no open wounds, it was okay after 8 weeks, which it was. She gave us the go-ahead without restriction. DD has been in my grandma's company many times since. I am also curious as to the nurses' opinions too. But that is what my (generally very conservative) pedi said.

  • To be completely honest, a large percentage of the community is walking around with MRSA. Most people don't even know that they have it. I would say that 1/3 of our patients are known to have MRSA.

You can have MRSA in different places - in the blood, urine, sputum, a wound.

Depending on the situation, I might take my baby to visit someone with MRSA. I would probably be extra careful with handwashing after contact with the person. I probably wouldn't have the person handling the baby. However, I think that unless the person has MRSA in the sputum and is coughing all over LO, or if the person has open oozing wounds, you should probably be ok.

My answer was actually a bit conservative with the "no handling of the baby" part. In most cases, I don't think that it would be an issue.

Thank you! It's DH's grandpa. He has to have surgery because if it Wednesday abs we wanted to take DD to go see him.

  • MRSA is only a real problem if it gets into a wound or cut. As M&M said, there is a good percentage of people walking aroun with it as part of their normal flora. That being said, it's still not something you want all over baby. But it's speed through contact, so I would say take LO, but I probably wouldn't have the gpa hold her.

This exactly. Most people are carriers of MRSA and don't even know it.
