Would you quit giving her solids?

Hadley hasn't been drinking her formula good for quite some time (before starting solids it was becoming a hassle to get it in her) but before getting sick she was at about 20 ounces a day despite her doctor's encouragement to get her closer to 24. Well, since a week ago Friday, she has been all but impossible to get her to drink it at all, has drove me nuts. She has been averaging about 10-12 a day although sometimes will be a bit more.

I asked at the doctor's office last week (when she had all but quit drinking any at all) and she said it was normal while she was sick, but as long as she was eating enough solids she would get enough fluids from that, to encourage her to drink (even with a syringe).

Well, she is starting to feel better but still doesn't have much interest in drinking her bottle. I feel like if I keep giving lots of solids it just encourages her to stay full and therefore will make her even more likely to refuse the bottle. Do you think I should quit giving her solids to try to force her to drink more? What if she is weaning herself from it? I know that babies get most of their nutrition from formula/BM for the first year, but what if they stop?!? Argh.

Re: Would you quit giving her solids?

  • I always stop with the solids when LO doesn't feel well.

She tends to not want them or I don't her to fill up on them and not drink.

I would stop for a day or two until she gets her formula intake back up.

  • I completely LOVE your siggy, keep meaning to say that.  Hadley is so very beautiful!!!

On the solids note, a lot of mom's are up to 3 solids a day, but everytime we go to 3, LO starts refusing the bottles, and we also struggle to get 24 ounces a day in him.  So we are back to do 2 solid meals a day for now.  Have you tried just cutting back?

  • FTM here, so in the grand scheme of things, what do I know?

I would cut back on the solids. They're still not necessary for her diet and viewed as practice foods.

  • Thanks! I should have mentioned too, I have cut back... we normally do 3-4 a day but we're only doing 1-2 now and it's still a no-go. It's as if she totally just cries when the bottle comes towards her mouth. Then it's how many days can you go with 10 ounces of formula and no solids? This stuff is so hard.

Awe sorry H2H... it is hard. I don't know if this is helpful or useful advice (FTM too) but maybe try changing formulas?

BTW - Is Hadley feeling better?

  • What's her hydration looking like?

  • I'm so sorry Hadley's still not feeling good. Aidan was refusing to eat his bottle when he was teething but would still eat solids. He probably cut his formula intake in half. I decided to give him cereal with a little puree mixed in bc then he was getting a little extra formula. I hope she's back to her happy self soon.

  • She isn't back to normal yet, but I can tell that she is headed that way, for the first time in over a week. So, thankful for that!

As far as hydration, she is peeing plenty and shows no signs of dehydration.

I agree with PPs posters and cut back on the solids and see what happens.

Is she taking a sippy cup? Maybe you can try formula in that? Can you thin the solids with some formula?

  • ^^ Sippy Cup!

This is what I was going to suggest. Try some different sippy cups or straw cups. Maybe she is just too cool for the bottle now :)

The only way I can get 24 oz in DS is to give him 1 bottle around 3AM. He eats much better at night. So, we don't STTN, not even close, but at least he is getting his milk.

  • WOW! Do we have the same child? Avery is STILL not taking her bottles. If you remember I was the one talking about how I cannot get over it and it drives me crazy. So lets recap: since Saturday I have been able to get her to take maybe one bottle in 24 hours (avg. 7 oz.) then she does the same thing as soon as we sit down to eat a bottle she arches her back and cannot get off me fast enough, if I try to force it she cries. I used to be able to sit her in the Nap Nanny and she would eat there, now she is out of that thing so fast. She has had on average 10-16oz total for the day since Saturday. Yesterday she took her morning bottle, ate 3.5 oz. of yogurt for breakfast, refused lunch bottle, ate 2oz. of formula in her oatmeal and a whole jar of fruit, refused bottle after nap, at 6, YES 6 oz. of formula in her oatmeal for dinner (ridiculous amount of oatmeal) and a half of jar of chicken and apples and peas. Refused bottle before bed. Woke up at 12 and I fed her because she had only 1 bottle yesterday. I really don't want to start getting up in the middle of the night to feed her but I am desperate and refuse to spoon feed her formula for 4 more months!

I called the pedi yesterday and talked through all this, she has no other signs of illness, slight fever (99-100) Tylenol doesn't make her want to eat anymore. Nurse said try to make sure she gets at least 16oz. in any form (including in oatmeal) and give it a few more days.

On Saturday I didn't give her any solids in hopes of her taking a bottle and it was a complete fail so now I at least give her some so she is getting something. I don't have the heart to completely starve her.

This is really long winded but I feel like we are in the same boat. I did post over on 9-12 board to see where their LO's were with ounces/day and I got a variety of answers anywhere from 13-30.

I feel like they are still too young to be making the transition to more solids less formula, but I am not sure what else to do.

Oh, and I have tried putting it in a sippy cup, she spits it out, tried with a straw, hates it, tried with a medicine syringe...still nothing. She is determined to bring me down!!! BUT she drank her morning bottle today? Go figure.

    Keep me posted.

    The End.

This. Cora went through a spell in January-February for about 2-3 weeks where she just wouldn't take her bottles. We cut back on the solids and only gave that to her during lunch and then suddenly she started to pick back up on the bottle then solids again. She's eating just fine. I wouldn't cut them out completely, but make sure you put space in between her solids and bottles. We do a bottle around 11/12 and then an hour later she gets solids. The bottles stay on an every 4-hr schedule but there is normally an hour between when she has a bottle and gets solids.

    Good luck.

I would suggest a sippy cup too in addition to cutting back on solids.

  • Im so sorry! This has got to be so stressful for you. We also have feeding issues so I know how you feel. Does she eat better when she is sleepy? I know this isnt a long term solution, but our LO refused bottle/breast during the day but seemed to nurse better at night when he was half asleep... so I would dream feed him just to make sure he was getting enough.
