Trying to Get Pregnant

thermometer -- how long do they last

This is my first month temping (and I have had 3 separate temp spikes -- grr)... This morning I went to take my temp and the thermometer sounded "wimpy." Like it was dying.  It didn't even read my temp.  I pressed the button again and it did the same thing.  I ended up shaking the thing (old school like I was using a mercury thermometer -- hey I was desperate Stick out tongue) and it finally gave me a temp.  I'm sure it's not an accurate temp as I was getting frustrated and it took me a few minutes to get it to read...

Anyways, how long do your thermometers last?  I have a Mabis from Walmart and like I said, it's the first month I've used it. Huh?

  • My experience with the Mabis, even though it's a very popular thermometer on this board, is that they suck.  I have had 3 of them since we started trying for #3 in September and they have all done exactly what you've described as well as.  After a few weeks, they just stopped working correctly or reliably.  I went back to my trusty BD thermometer that I've had for 10 years and am very happy.

  • This is my first month temping too, and while I find a lot of people don't like it, I have the Target up&up basal thermometer. I haven't had any issues with it so far, it seems to be pretty reliable - but then again this is my first month. I don't have a walmart/walgreens near me to get that mabis (wherever the sell it) so I'm making due with what I have. For under $10, it's been so far, so good!

  • My first Mabis lasted 6 months.  It never completely died, but it started reading my temp early.  If I used it with another thermometer it would consistently read over 1 degree lower.

This. My first Mabis lasted 6 cycles and then died. I tried to use the Target one but hated it so I bought another Mabis.

  • Thanks ladies... I think I'm going to buy another one.  I will just wait for AF to show and continue to chart. A different thermometer shouldn't really change anything by way of temperature but I feel like I'm not going to "trust" the temps I get until next cycle starts. Just a mind thing I suppose.  Thanks again!
