Diaper Rash Cream making the rash worse..?

When DD gets even a little bit red, the daycare almost always immediately puts cream on the rash and by the time she gets home the rash appears quite irritated and more red then it was before I left her at daycare. However, when she's at home and gets a bit red at home, I tend to leave it be or just put a bit of baby powder in the affected area. I don't, typically, treat the rash until it gets a bit worse. Anyway, most of the time, the rash clears up before I have to apply any type of medicated cream. Is it possible that the diaper rash cream could actually be making the rash worse???

  • Desitin always made Cy's diaper rashes way worse, and he always screamed when i put it on. I've since swiched to beudroux (sp?) and we don't have that problem anymore.... Could it be the brand they are using?

They're using the same one that I use at home when the first round of defense doesn't work. It's actually the only one I've found that works when the first line of defense doesn't work. I'm thinking about taking the cream that's at daycare home so they can't slather her with it the second she's slightly red. I just don't want to come off as not wanting to treat diaper rash, I just really think that, at first, the cream makes things worse vs better.

  • I am not sure how true this is or of it will help, but a friend once told me to switch between diaper creams. She claims that one will stop working after a while and it is good to mix it up. We use Burt's Bees and switch it up with Triple Paste. I swear Boudreauxs Butt Paste just made my kid's diaper rash worse and I threw it out after giving it a couple of chances.

If you apply too much of it, too thickly and too often, it can actually trap the heat and moisture and make it worse. A thin coat, only when necessary, is our pedi's suggestion

This. And some brands contain pretty strong ingredients. I would ask them to change to powder, A&D Ointment, or nothing unless you ask them to use the stronger cream.

  • I know that when an LO gets a yeast infection, diaper rash cream makes it worse. Do you think that's a possibility for your LO?
