Homemade Baby Food- Green Beans

So I have made all of LO's baby food up to this point. We've done sweet potatoe, squash, and alvacado so far. He loves sweet potatoes and squash- not too crazy about the avacado- but I mix it in with the others and he's none the wiser. Well this weekend I made green beans (bought them frozen and steamed them, ran them through the food processor) I did have to add some BM to get it smoother. Well when I fed LO- he looked at me like I was crazy. He never spit it out- and did open his mouth for more- but didn't gobble it up like the sweet potatoes and squash. I tried again last night- but still just wouldn't really swallow it- just kinda held it in his mouth. Do you think he doesn't like the green beans- or is it because I made them- or do you think LO just doesn't like green beans?

TIA!

Re: Homemade Baby Food- Green Beans

  • My daughter had the EXACT SAME reaction when I tried to feed her the beans I cooked for her!  I'm also convinced it was just because it was the first time she had a vegetable that didn't at least somewhat of a sweet taste, as even peas can be a little on the sweet side.  I kept feeding them to her for four days, once a day and she ate them, just looked a little confused, lol.  I'm going to go back to them in two weeks when we start having a little bit of two foods at each meal.  One good tip that my mom gave me - - when you start doing that, make sure to give the beans first, and then follow up with the second food almost like it's a dessert.  Otherwise LO will only want the second sweeter food and ignore eating the beans  :)  Good luck!

  • DD does the same thing with my homemade green beans, i bought fresh organic and steamed and used a baby bullet and felt good about the texture but she just lets it fall out of her mouth - she prefers jarred green beans but I still have to mix them with something else, carrots or squash usually to get her to eat them.

  • I make all of DS's food too, and so far he loves everything except green beans.  I tried making a couple of batches, I wasn't happy with the first batch, too chunky.  Tried again, second batch was a little better, but I still couldn't get the right texture.  I tried feeding them to DS over and over again until a couple of days ago when he gagged on it so much that he projectile vomited all over the high chair (sorry if that was TMI).  I thought maybe it was a texture problem, possibly the green beans were too fibrous?  So today, I broke down and bought the jarred stuff and DH told me that DS was still not having it...

    Just keep trying, I guess...

The first time I made green beans I steamed them until they were pretty mushy (like canned) and hten pureed the heck out of them. He loved them! The second batch I made I didn't cook them as long and I let them more grainy in texture then smooth. He's not a big fan...

  • If you suspect that the texture might be the culprit you can try running the puree through a strainer/sieve too.  Peas and green beans are really hard to get really smooth (skins on the peas and the seeds in the green beans).  Otherwise, like everyone else said, just keep trying.  DD spat cottage cheese out at me for a while and then started to eat it, sometimes it's just getting used to something new.
