Our pediatrician told us today we don't have to give our LO (2 mo old) rice cereal until we want to as long as mama and baby are both happy with only breastmilk. I'm not real fond of the idea of plain white rice cereal, nice and starchy and full of junk, and I'm not really in a hurry to start cereal anyway. When did you start your LO on something other thank breast milk and what was it?
Re: Rice Cereal?
We started with slices of very ripe banana about a week after DS turned 6 mos. We followed baby-led weaning and he's never had any of the pre-packaged baby cereals. I did offer him regular, old-fashioned oatmeal a few times. He did not like it.
You definitely have a ways to go yet. The AAP recommends exclusive BFing for the first 6 months. At six months, you can start solids with cereal, pureed baby food (store bought or homemade) or just chunks of soft foods. Some people also delay solids longer. The latest I've seen is 9 months.
Most pedis these day say to wait until AT LEAST 4-6 months. Mine said to skip the rice/oatmeal cereals because it has no real nutritional value. We were going to wait until 6 but R was really interested and fit in all of the "ready for BLW" categories so we started with bananas and avocados a little after 4 months.
Check out wholesomebabyfood.com, they have great resources on BLWing. Follow your gut, it sounds like you're on the right track.

We bypassed baby cereal altogether. We EBF until 6mo, then we did BLW, starting with roasted sweet potato and mashed avocado on wheat toast "sticks". We did start giving him actual oatmeal cereal around 7 or 8 mo.
ETA: I just re-read your post. I hope that no pediatrician would be reccomending cereal to a 2mo old :-/ Breastmilk or formula only until 6mo.
If you haven't seen this already, you might find it interesting. I hope to avoid the cereals as well and be able to start with real food.
