when does milk let down?

I gave birth on Leap Day, Wed, 2/29/12, late at night.  Today is already Monday and although my breasts are hard, my milk has not let down, I don't think.  I pumped and nothing came out of the pump.  Doctor has told me to alternate between trying to nurse and giving formula.  When I try to nurse, baby gets frustrated after he latches because I assume he is not getting any milk.  Sometimes he sucks, but I don't know if he is using the breast as a pacifier or if he is really getting anything.  Doctor also said that the pump is not bhe best indicator.  Any insights and/or suggestions?

Re: when does milk let down?

  • It took me 4 or 5 days for it to fully come through. There was colostrum and some transitional creamy white milk before it was thin and flowing. Don't worry, it'll happen. Just keep feeding your baby and expressing. Don't let formula feeding stop you from expressing and feeding - you got to stimulate those boobs!

  • It took me about 4 days until my milk came in, which is about normal. The doctor said to not worry, since the colostrum from after birth has a lot of calories, which is what the baby needs.
  • It takes a few days, keep trying. Is there a LC you can talk to? They can be more helpful than a doc, IMO. Have you tried hand expression/massage?

  • take your breast pump and your baby and go see a lactation consultant .. they'll be a lot more helpful than your doctor ..

I agree. If your breasts are firm then you have milk. If they feel less firm after nursing, then your baby is getting that milk out. If the baby isn't getting the milk out, you're going to be in a world of hurt. A lot of times it takes some adjusting to start getting good production with the pump.

out of curiosity - why did your dr. suggest formula?

  • Try warm compress and massaging your breasts before nursing. Def sounds like your milk is in and you're engorged.
