Please suggest some fun kid movies

I think we're going to do a movie at DS' belated bday party.  My kids don't watch movies often, and it's usually at someone else's house when they do.  I guess I'm not that in tune with kid movies of the moment, so I need some help.

DS and his friends are really into pirates, superheros, police, construction, building, dinosaurs, etc., but ideas don't need to be limited to those themes.  I guess ideally the movies would be on the shorter side too just b/c I don't want to overextend their attention span (ages 4-6yo).  TIA!

ETA: These movies don't necessarily need to play to the adult crowd either.  Parents and siblings are invited, but the party is really intended for DS and his friends.  I'm more concerned about it being something that will hold their attention, be fun for them and that it's something that is appropriate.

  • My DD's favorite movies of the moment are Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2, How to Train Your Dragon, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.  All of them are pretty fun and entertaining.

  • Kung Fu Panda, maybe the Incredibles, Land Before Time, Shrek.  I'd probably recommend previewing them to make sure they are the length and subject matter you want.

I would consider also maybe doing two episodes of a TV show back to back like Jake & the Neverland Pirates, Dinosaur Train, etc.

  • My sisters boys are 5&7 and are really into Ghost Busters, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars movies.

  • DD and I just watched "Rio" the other night and we both enjoyed it.  She's not a big movie watcher but this one kept her attention the entire time.

  • My son (almost 5 yr old) loves the Buddies movies... Snow buddies, Spooky Buddies, Treasure Buddies. They have puppies and other real animals with voice overs. They are pretty much the only movies he watches.

  • I second Rio. Kids seem to love it.
  • It sounds like you pretty closely monitor so I will give you my (husband's) conservative take. Now to be fair, I do NOT practice what I preach, as DS has watched all of the films  below at least 10 times in the past two years.

how to train your dragon.  DS LOVES it, but DH is very averse as they say kill at least 10 - 12 times and there are some intense battle scenes.

We also really like kung fu panda as well BUT DS often wants to then practice kung fu following the movie

toy story 1 or 2 I think are good ( 3 is a little existential and has a whole facing one's own mortality scene that I just found too much)

I think that cars 1 & 2 have a good balance of action, brightness and kid friendly themes.
