Refusing solids, only wants puffs

For the past two weeks, D has been absolutely HORRIBLE about eating solids, nursing, and sleeping. I knew she was going through a growth spurt and she had just started crawling, but I think she may be teething, too (the trifecta of no sleep for mommy). She's gotten better about nursing and her sleep schedule has improved, but she'll only eat a few spoonfuls of solids (she gets the Gerber stage 3 purees) before she starts crying and refusing to take another bite. She's excited when I bring out her bowl of puree, and acts like she wants more even though she's crying and pushing my hand away. If I offer her puffs (she gets the Happy Baby organic puffs, Gerber wagon wheels, or the Gerber Lil' Crunchies), she's happy instantly and munches away like nothing is wrong. Two weeks ago, she was eating an entire serving of solids three times a day (breakfast, a snack, and dinner with nursing in between), and now I'm lucky if we can get halfway through a serving.

I know her mouth must hurt, and we give her Pediacare and Hyland's teething tablets when she starts showing teething symptoms, but I don't want her just eating puffs. I have no idea what to do. Help?

PS: I just found out that she's getting her left bottom canine in instead of the bottom incisors like we had originally thought. O_o

Re: Refusing solids, only wants puffs

  • My first instinct after reading this would be to not offer puffs at meals, so that she doesn't learn that if she fusses she gets to eat puffs instead of purees. You could offer puffs as a snack between meals so she can still enjoy them without them replacing her other food. My DD often only takes 5 or so bites of food before deciding she's done, but we do meals anyways and its gradually improving for us. Good luck!

I agree.  I also think I would stop giving purees and start giving food.  Steamed/roasted veggies and/or roasted fruits.  It sounds like she wants to feed herself.

  • I also would stop the purees and give her real food.

  • Try only doing real food and follow the principles of Baby Led Weaning. Trust me, it works wonders. My DD loves stalks of broccoli, spears of cucumber, sweet potato fries, bananas, green beans, and she hated purees.

    Ditto all of this

And I wouldnt be replacing ANY milkfeeds with food. You should be feeding formula or BM with real food in between. Milkfeeds provide the nutrition your baby needs to thrive NOT table foods or purees or puffs.
