Trying to make sure I remember all the little things for baby and one thing I've been wondering...is a crib mobile actually necessary (assuming baby is sleeping in a crib)? If so, what should I look for in one?
My LO enjoys her mobile's. The monkey one that came with her PNP is one of her favorite things to look at...she smiles at it. MIL also got me a tiny love brand one for the crib. She likes that one too, but we don't use it all that often. Mostly because it stimulates her, rather than making her sleepy. I do use it on occasion so that I can take a quick shower. Also if LO is not going to sleep easily, I will turn it on for her and go back in the room a little bit later to try to rock her to sleep again. I try to look for ones that the animals (or whatever object) is tilted so baby can see more than just the teddy bear's crotch. Not that the baby cares, but still. Absolutely necessary...no. Nice to have...yes.
We have a baby einstein one and right now DS stares at the part the music comes out of in awe lol. He could care less about the spinning part but I am sure he will like it in time.
It isn't necessary but if it will occupy him for a second for me to put his clothes up or whatever then woo hoo!

Not necessary but helpful for entertaining baby. IMO those cute ones people make ( like on etsy) are a waste. Ds2 had one similar to the tiny love ones now sold. He liked the movement up and down and the different colors. I would put him in the crib and it would entertain him for a bit. I haven't gotten one for baby girl yet but I'll prob get the tiny love princess one.

Totally necessary!! DD is 3 and in a twin bed and I lashed the FP aquarium crib thin to it because she still likes her fishy music at bedtime. We have that one and a tiny love one. The tiny love was great in that stare up at things turning around stage and now the aquarium is fabulous!

I wouldn't say it's necessary but nice to have! I made ds #1 because I couldn't find a mobile that I liked AND would fit onto the crib (his crib has nice fat sides). He slept in our room for about 12 wks so he didn't really look at the mobile in his crib BUT we did have one in his cradle which he liked. Once we moved him to his crib he found the mobile and would "talk" to it. It's still above his crib (I made it adjustable and it hangs from the ceiling) and he still talks to the monkeys, counts all the numbers and talks about all the colors on the mobile.
As for a mobile for ds #2 I made his as well (again couldn't find on that worked w/ our theme and would fit on the thick sides of the crib). Im assuming his reaction will be similar to ds #1

DD also loved the rainforest one! And I agree with pp, the cutesy wind up ones are not worth it, go for the non matchy ones with a remote, sound & movement!
We have the Fisher Price rainforest soother that attaches to the side of the crib, but now I wish we had a mobile. Once they get older (around 3 months), they really start to be entertained by things like that and the soother helps DS fall asleep on his own. I think a mobile would help him even better.
We got the FP one that projects on the ceiling and she LOVES it, still to this day. It's awesome as you can take the mobile portion off then it projects on the ceiling. I thought she would have outgrown it by now, but nope. I may have to buy a second one for this little guy. Best $50 I spent.

No, I wasted $20+ on one, opened the package, threw away the receipt and then found out that it wouldnt fit the wide upper slat of the crib. I was better off with the mountable crib projecter. It played music and made stars and shapes on the ceiling and I think that was $2 at goodwill.
