we're thinking of making DD's crib into a toddler bed. she's definitely not outgrown her crib, but she's asking about a big girl bed. I'm not sure she's going to stay put in a bed, and we figure this way if things don't go as planned we'll put her back in the crib.
we also don't have the space righ tnow for a bigger bed.
Is this bad? Should we just wait till we have the space and then go straight to a twin sized bed?
Re: toddler bed for a 3 year old
Are you talking about changing a convertible crib into a toddler bed? If you don't have room for a twin, that sounds like a good plan. She likely won't stay in the bed, but it really isn't a big deal. It's all part of giving her more independence. DD often doesn't stay in her bed. If she gets up and messes around for a little while, we ignore it unless she's noisy or unsafe. For a loooong time after we switched over she'd fall asleep on the floor every night and we'd move her to her bed when we went to sleep. It wasn't a problem. Now she will get up and get done what she wants to get done (put each animal to bed in a different spot in her room usually), get back in bed and go to sleep. If we make a big deal out of it, she gets stubborn and it turns into a fight. If we let her do her thing, she usually goes to bed pretty quickly. She was in a toddler bed from 15 months until Christmas (3 3/4 yrs) because at 15 months she started base jumping out of her crib. Now she's in a twin.
If you don't have a convertible crib, I wouldn't bother buying a toddler bed. Just wait until you're ready for a twin.
DD changed over to a daybed before we got her a twin bed. We bought a stoplight alarm clock that stayed red at night and turns green for the time we set. We told DD if she stayed in her bed until the green light she would get a treat and the light has worked from the 1st night we used it.
good luck
