Cloth Diapering

Are gDiapers really that bad?

I noticed that my local BRU has them on clearance + I have a 20% off any baby item, so I was thinking about trying them, but it seems like they have a bad reputation.  Just wondering what it is people don't (or do) like?  I read some of the reviews on Amazon but it seems like the bad reviews are 'normal' CD complaints, leaking, bad fit, etc.

Re: Are gDiapers really that bad?

  • I can only speak for our experience so far with the gdiapers. I got a big set from a local mom at a great price or we may not have tried them.

PROS: trim fit, very cute, fit from newborn and will get us well into our OS dipes, love the two parts with the snap in liner and reusing the gpant, use prefolds to stuff, use the disposable inserts for outings, dry quickly out on the line.

CONS: We have had some leaks - always out the leg, and usually resulting from the insert being soaked. So I guess not allowing for enough absorbency could be an issue. We haven't tried stuffing with hemp or anything though so that might have eliminated that issue.

The couple of times I've tried out our fuzzibunz on her we have had leaks out the legs as well. I'm struggling with fit on those, where we don't usually have fit issues with the gdiapers. I really think a lot comes down to the shape of the  baby - especially the legs!

  • I love our gDiapers. My biggest reason for using them (and still my favorite thing) is that they are as trim as disposables. I like that I don't have to struggle with pants or buying larger sizes in clothing just to fit his diapers. We're good about following "the rules" (liner up in the crease, waistband pulled up a bit, change every 2 hours or so) and very rarely get leaks. Occasionally, the shell itself will get a tiny band of wetness, but I can't remember the last time he got pee on his clothes (maybe as a newborn?) and we've never had a blowout.

My second favorite thing about them is the option to use the flushable inserts. It's so nice to be able to toss or flush his diapers when we're out of the house for several hours instead of dealing with an extra bag. It's easy to get plenty of diapers in my diaper bag for the whole day and have space for extras. We also use a flushie on top of a cloth insert for overnight and he easily goes 10 hours without any leaking or fussing from feeling wet.

LO went through tons of poopy diapers in the beginning (he had several 24-diaper days!) and I would have been broke if I'd had to buy enough cloth diapers to get me through from one laundry cycle to the next.

That said, I know some people hate them. I committed to them from the start and once we got past the learning curve, I absolutely love them.

This pretty much sums up my expierence too.... except the leaks part, we haven't had any of those, he isn't a heavy wetter. But i LOVE my Gdiapers!

  • I bought some newborn sized and flushable inserts to use while we are at the hospital- I like the design and think that as with anything, there is a learning curve that you just have to be willing to work through!
  • I bought a huge lot of mixed CDs from a woman on Craigslist (she had 30 BG which is what I wanted) and part of the lot was 2 small gDiaper pants but not liners.  I only had 10 small CDs that fit LO since she's still too small for her OS BGs.  I decided to buy one package of gDiaper cloth liners to give them a try.  I figured if they didn't work well I could always use the liners as doublers in her other diapers.  She's only worn them a few times but so far no leaks.

  • I was given a couple of small g's from a friend. Beyond the normal "bad fit" arguements here is my take:

For us, g's were extra work, a lot more parts (cover, liner and diaper) and pricy. They are sized diapers, but the small still don't fit until the OS do~10 lbs.

For less work and less money overall, we went with Flips. Only the cover and the insert, and these are one size: I don't have to buy more as LO gets bigger.

For trimness, Gro-via also work well: again, just a cover and an insert, plus I like grovia shells better for cuteness factor. And these are OS as well.

Both of these options have their own disposable insert, but the g disposable insert works in these models too.

  • I love my gdiapers. LO has been in the size. Small since 7.5lbs. If you are having trouble with leaks in the legs then they are not tight enough. If you are getting leaks around the waistband then they are too tight. Sometimes LO can be in between sizes. Right now LO is around 11lbs, the smalls are too small b/c of her chunky legs but the mediums are too big. So I put her in the mediums but put two cloths in and we have no leaks.

The videos they have online are very helpful and if you have questions you can contact them and they will happily help you. Also, they have a Facebook page that is very helpful.

They are very easy to use even DH uses them.
