programs for 2 year olds

The babies will be 21 months old when the new bambino arrives. We are moving this fall and I'm thinking about enrolling them in a childcare program 2-3 half days a week so that they still get some playtime and structured activities (and attention) when the new baby comes. And also so that I get some down time and alone time with the new baby.

I was hoping to enroll them in a preschool, but our preschools (maybe all preschools?) don't start until 3 years of age.

If your 2 year old attends a program part-time, what type of program is it and how often do they go? Also, if you wouldn't mind sharing roughly the cost you spend per week, that would be great.

One thing I'm a little nervous about is "daycare germs" and a newborn, but I need to just get over myself with that I think.

  • My twins will be starting at their preschool in the Fall. They will be 21 months old. They will be going M/W/F from 9a-2p. My oldest daughter started at this age too with the same program at this school (and will still be there for Pre-K in the fall as well). She, and I, loved it!

Have you tried any of the church preschools? Most of the ones around here (and there are a ton) start at 18 months. The 18-24 month classes are smaller and they usually only have one class, as opposed to multiple 3 and 4 year old classes, so they fill up quick. We already had registration in Feb. for the Fall, so I would definitely start looking into it soon!

We pay $330 per kid for 3 days/week, 5 hrs/day...it adds up, but totally worth it!

  • Oh, and my DD1 was in preschool when the twins came home from the NICU. I was nervous (and I didn't BF), but they were fine. I'm really obcessive about hand washing, etc. I was always on her about getting in their faces (I felt bad, but you have to protect the little ones).

The new baby will be fine! It will be nice for you to get some alone time with him/her, and some play time for the twins.

haha, thanks for the correction. I almost had a stroke :D

  • I agree - look at churches. In my area, the most raved about programs are through churches. There is also a Mothers Day Out  - but you have to sign up/pay for a six month commitment which I wasn't crazy about.

We ended up joining a health club for $200/mo. Membership covers me & DH, our nanny, and all three kids. They have a childcare center that is amazing with a 3 hr/day limit. It has a nap room, snack room/kitchen, tubes/tunnels/slides and toys galore. In addition, there is a licensed pre-school (starting at age 3) on site, and a newly renovated zero depth pool in summer.

We figured the nanny can use it during the week (ie. leave the twins and go do a swim class with the baby) or leave the baby (when she's a little older) and do a tumbling class with the twins.  And we can take turns using it too. I can't wait to work out again (and maybe sneak away to sit in the sauna too)!

I hope this ends up being a good fit for us. We're pretty excited about it.

I just found a Y in our area that has babysitting hours from 8:15-2 p.m. Otherwise they are all 8-12. I'm thinking about switching facilities once my current membership expires. The place I go to now constantly pulls me off the treadmill to do something for my kids (change a diaper, comfort them if they are crying, etc.) It is the most frustrating hour of my day.

  • We put DD in a MMO (mother's morning out) program this past Fall -- because all the preschools in our area also only accept kids 3 years old at minimum. It's a nursery school setting but isn't necessarily focused on educational learning (although she has learned plenty of new things since she started).

The program she is in is for 2-3 year olds and she attends Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-12. We pay $31 a day (we live right outside of Boston) -- vacations and holidays are excluded.

We absolutely love it for her and she loves it too! It's been great for her to have her own "thing" and it's been nice for me to have some alone time with the babies.

  • You also might want to check into smaller daycares.  My girls go to a daycare that has two locations, and they allow kids to attend part time.  They still get the structure and crafts and play time, and since it's a center they do curriculums and all of the preschool things as well.
