Preemies

When did you get off extra calories?

Our kids are 26 weekers and have been on 22 calories since we brought them home.  They're 9 months now, 6 adjusted and I was wondering when other poeple switched back to regular formula, which I believe is 20 calories.  It's so expensive, I'd say we spend about $400 a month on formula.  I asked the doctor for their first few visits, but she would always just say not yet.  Now that their older and eating better I was curious when other poeple had their kids switch over?  Thanks!

  • He gained really fast in the beginning, so we cut out the extra cals at about 4 weeks adjusted (4.5 months actual.) He gets one bottle of pediasure now every day and the rest whole milk.

  • We are just now stopping the extra cal formula and switching over to WCM.  C is 12 adjusted and 15 months actual.  I don't know what kind of formula your babies are on but from my experience the higher cal formula isn't any more expensive?!  Any formula is $$.
  • My LO was off the high calorie formula before NICU discharge because she gained a lot of weight.  The neo told us it was based completely on their placement on growth charts.  As soon as she got to the 51 percentile, she went to the regular stuff.

  • DS is on Neosure for extra calories and when he turns a year we're going to switch to WCM.
  • Our Pedi told us to do what our NICU said, which was to give our DD two bottles/day fortified with 24 cal NeoSure (with breastmilk) until she is 6 months old (actual) and around 15 lbs.

  • 9 months.  We wanted to go off at 6 months, but pedi basically said no.  In the end, I think she was right.  He is doing great on regular calorie formula and breast milk now though.

  • Also, any formula can be made to 22 calorie.  Your doctor has an advanced degree.  Push back, make them do the dumb algebra problem, so you know how much extra to add per oz to make it 22 cal.

  • We stopped fortifying with Neosure fairly early on. DS's reflux was really aggravated by the Neosure. When I stopped pumping at 9 months actual, we went straight to regular Similac. His weight gain hasn't been extremely fast, but he stayed on his growth curve. We switched to WCM at 1 year adjusted and he's done fine with weight gain.
