Has anyone's child had their adenoids removed? My 6 year old is having this done (plus tubes placed in ears) and I am wondering what to expect. Any advice is appreciated...
DS had it done in two separate procedures because he was a bit too congested for the dr. to do the adenoids when he did the tubes. Basically, it made him a new kid. He finally turned into a good sleeper, was night potty trained, whined less, could hear better, and was all around more pleasant. We never had an ear infection issue, but of course it would have improved that as well.
Your LO will be disoriented and pretty fussy when they wake up, but other than that, which might last an hour or two, but they get over it quickly.
my daughter had her tubes in and she still was getting awful ear infections and constant runny nose.
a year later they were put in again and adnoids taken out...it's been 7 months and knock on wood, no illness!! she did great with surgery. it was def worse on me. she was back to herself as soon as were out of hospital
good luck. i was so against it but it helped she know how to see a speech therapist bec. of how she speaks, they said its bec of all the fluid that sat in her ears for so long, she heard like she was underwater
My DS had tubes put in and adnoids removed last fall (age 2 yrs 10 mo). It has been amazing. He used to be continually ill and now he has only been sice twice since the surgery. He was fussy right after the surgery but back to his normal self a day later. I wish we had done it sooner.
My DD is currently recovering from tonsil and adenoids removed and ear tubes put in. I think the hard part is the tonsil recovery, that is at least what the dr said.
Its been rough with getting her to eat and drink.
The actual surgery was a breeze. Outpatient surgery.
This last week has been rough with either DH or me on one couch and DD on the other (she didn't want to sleep in her bed)
She sometimes will have real bad ear pain, but the dr (at the follow up appt) said everything looked fine and she passed the hearing tests too.
My 4yr. old DS had his adenoids out and tubes placed 3 weeks ago. I had myself in a tailspin over the surgery going into it. It was a breeze! The surgery itself was super fast and he was pretty out of it in recovery. He whimpered a little bit coming out of anesthesia, but was otherwise was okay. He ate a lot of soft foods that first day home, but was back to normal the next day. We alternated between tylenol and motrin for the 3 days after surgery, and he was fine. I will say that he sounded like death for a week after--completely congested and had a cough. I am guessing it was from everything draining out of his head. Now, 3 weeks later he is a new kid. Sleeps well without snoring, is more active, can breathe much better. His hearing is back to normal. Good luck!
Both my son's had tubes put in and adnoids removed at 2.5 and 4.5 years of age and they both did great! They have hardly gotten colds and it has been almost a year. Last year they had constant colds and ear infections and were on antibiotics for months in concession, it was horrible. My oldest son actually had hearing impairments from the ear infections and then once they had the surgury no problems ever since.
The procedure went great but waking up from the anesthesia was a bit rough for my youngest, they are just out of it and emotional. 4 hours later they acted as if they never had it done, very easy.
There is a book, getting tubes in my ears or something like that (Amazon) we got for them weeks before the procedure and it described all the steps and what to expect. We read that alot and toured the hospital before the surgury and they just did great. They talk about their tubes all the time and they have no fear associated with it and can say why they have them etc.
