prenatal vitamins question

Has anyone else experienced prenatal vitamins making you sick when you started taking them?  I've been achy and a little queasy ever since switching from my regular vitamin to a pre-natal.  I was chatting with a friend last night who just started taking prenatals and she mentioned the same thing.  I'm just wondering if it's common and how others have dealt with it.

Thanks!

It is common - try taking them before bed instead of in the morning.

  • Yup. Like PP mentioned I take mine at night. I also switched to New Chapter Organics brand. So far they're the only kind that haven't made me completely queasy.
  • I know some folks need to take them right after eating (I get queasy after taking ar egular vitamin, so I take them to work and have it after lunch...easier for me to remember).  I've heard others say that the Target brand vitamins didn't make them queasy when others did:)

  • I had to try several brands of vitamins before finding the Target brand. They are the only ones (prenatal and regular) that didn't/don't make me nauseous.

  • I take CVS brand pre-natal and DHA.  I had tried a few others that made me sick.  With the CVS ones I can take them in the morning and I have no issues.
It took 7 IUIs but it was totally worth it!

  • Some times when i would take my regular vitamins, they would make me sick so that didnt make me want to take them.

Now that im TTC and Nita is pregnant we are both taking Melaleuca prenatal also Omega-3 with DHA and EPA we take them with food and we both feel fine.

  • It is most likely the iron in them that is making you feel sick. If you can't stand them, try an iron free one (assuming you don't have low iron) and then up the iron in your diet.

  • MY OTC ones did but the prescription ones I took did not. They did however give me wicked heartburn which sucked because you were not supposed to take any kind of calcium supplement or antacids within 1 hour of taking them.

You can also get a "low iron" version, which has less iron and therefore less queasiness, but also gets you some supplementation.  I know they make Rx low-iron ones, I'm not sure about OTC.

Does anyone know if you are the kind of person who always has stellar iron levels if you really need all that extra iron in the prenatal?

  • And if you aren't used to that extra iron, you might want to buy a stool softner. Just sayin'.
