afraid to do too much. ..

Pretty much 5 weeks along and I'm afraid to do too much. I used to Zumba but this past time I went I didn't get into it like i used to because I didn't wanna screw anything up. Am I being ridiculous? What exersizes can I do? I'm kind of overweight now, so I don't want to gain a ridiculous amount during the pregnancy

  • I am in the exact same boat, except it isn't Zumba for me, it's spinning.  But same thing with the overweight issue, and not wanting to gain too much, especially when I'm hungry ALL the time.  My OB told me that a good rule of thumb is that the max heart rate should be at MOST double your resting heart rate.  So if you don't have a heart rate monitor, you should invest in one if you can.  But other than that, she said that as long as you're not doing some crazy full contact sport, exercise is fine, and good for the baby.  I've been sick with a ridiculous cold this past week, and so haven't felt like doing anything, but I'm going to get back into the gym on Monday.  I'm looking at this as a GREAT opportunity to get my arms and legs super toned, since my abs are otherwise engaged.  :-)  Good luck!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who is hungry constantly! lol I thought I was going crazy benig this hungry so early on. I'm not used to eating this much so this is aalll new to me. I think that since it's starting to get nicer out I'll go on long walks with the dog and then start using an elliptical or something. I just don't think Zumbas the smartest for me anymore. lol

  • Wow Ladies....women have  completed marathons pregnant and had healthy babies.  My dr told me I didnt have to modify my workout intensity at all. (However, he did say that when I get big I may have balance issues Huh?

     IMO....don't quit Zumba, keep exercising!

  • It's normal to be nervous, but keep up with the Zumba if you can! You'll feel much better energy-wise. I did Body Combat until 32 weeks and lifted heavy until 2 days before delivering with no problems. It felt awesome. In Combat, I just went early once and asked the instructor how I could modify if needed. I drank tons of water and took breaks if I needed to.

If you have any pain, dizziness, leaking or bleeding with exercise, then you should scale it back. Wear a heart rate monitor if it will give you peace of mind.

  • You'll be fine!! I've been doing zumba, running, walking, light weight lifting, etc. this whole time--it helps so much to continue exercising!  Once you get farther along (second trimester) you'll probably want to do lower impact zumba (i.e. not so much jumping), but only because it gets uncomfortable; zumba and other exercises not only WON'T "screw anything up," they will help you have an overall healthier pregnancy and sometimes easier labor. Keep it up, you'll be so happy with yourself! :)
