Dumb Q re: weaning

Maybe moms of 2+ or anyone really...I'm not ready to stop BFing but the other day I had to be away from DS about 8 hours and I didn't have my pump I was ready to explode! DS was asleep when I got home so I had to pump, I got about half a gallon I swear! I thought I was done pumping but I had to relieve some of the discomfort not to mention any time for some reason I go a little longer than usual I end up with a plugged duct...so that got me thinking, what is the process of weaning like? Gradually so you start producing less and less then it's adi?s or is it more abrupt and how do you deal with it?

Re: Dumb Q re: weaning

  • Check out the breastfeeding board, there's a ton of posts about weaning over there.  I'm not ready to wean yet either, but from what I understand is that when you're ready to stop pumping there's a couple of different methods of dropping sessions, but you want to do it slowly so you body has time to adjust.  The two I remember are either pumping for a shorter period for your normal sessions or going longer between sessions.

  • My plan won't be the norm, I only pump once a day and produce enough to feed her at daycare with that one pump. When we are home, I EBF.

My plan is to slowly reduce time pumping. I will start this when she is about 11-12mo. Right now I pump for abt 20 min. I will reduce time by about 1-2 min every couple days until I drop the session and only BF at home- no pumping. I plan to let DD2 self wean when either she feels like it OR I "run out" of milk from no pumping. (we are apart about 8-9 hours a day now, in the summer it will be about 4-5 hours apart)

As an aside, I have about 300oz stored that I will give her for daycare as I am weaning from the pump.

Did you pump a lot to get your milk supply up that much? Or do you just have a really good supply? I wish I had more milk and I think if I would have pumped more in the beginning i would have more. Sorry off subject that's just a lot of milk!

  • I'm a good producer. :)

But I used to pump 2x a day (cut back to once only about a month ago) and one of those sessions went right into the freezer - everyday. any other "random, unplanned" pumps went into freezer also - a weekend session here and there, occasional third pump, etc.
