Ok, so I know this is kind of along the lines of an "I'll never", but whatever. Just go with it. It's Saturday night. :P
Is there a kind of pet that you say/have said that you won't ever allow your kids to get?
Obviously we're talking along the normal lines of pets. Not sheep or alligators here. And sure, if you ever win the lottery/get a ton of land/what have you your thoughts may change. But I mean as of this moment, where do you stand?
Re: Poll: Pets
I don't ever want to have a ferret, rabbit, a bird, or an insect/arachnid as a pet.
In my experience, ferrets always turn whatever room they're kept in into a "musky room". I can smell them across the house. Kudos to anyone who can keep them without stinking up the place, but I don't think I have it in me.
Rabbits scare me. And if you've ever fed a live rabbit to a giant python, you've heard them scream. It's horrifying. Also they're poo factories.
Birds can be lovely, but again, I've had too much experience with noisy, biting, blood feathers, and poo. Again. I know they can be magnificent, lovely creatures. But not necessarily in my house.
Insects and arachnids... they can get out. They just creep me out. I know it's selfish to restrict what my kid can get because of my issues, but nope, not gonna get one in the forseeable future.
I'm ok with fish, frogs (even poison dart frogs), turtles, snakes, lizards, and almost all other mammals.
We're not getting another dog. Too much work. We love the one we have, but we're done when she's gone.
DH insists that we also won't get hamsters/gerbils/small mammals. They creep him out. He could probably handle a guinea pig, but it would depend on how hard the kid begged, LOL. We're odd in that we'd prefer reptiles. Just no snakes.
Hamsters or Guinnea Pigs. They give me the heebee geebees.
We live in ND with about a 5 month winter. I do not like winter. DH is allergic to cats (not that I would ever want one) - but due to our winters as a factor, we will never get one.
No rodents either. They are my phobia.
We have 2 fish & 3 kids and I feel content.

Turtles! Because they Live forever (like 50 + years) if you take good care of them, Die immediately if you don't, Carry salmonella, Really arent fun or exciting pets.
Pet turtle released into the wild are a serious threat to wild populations because they are usually non natives species and many turtle are captured wild leading to decimation of wid populations
*the naturalist steps off her soapbox*
This exactly!
I am not much of an animal person. I grew up with 3 farms, my great grandmothers, my grandparents (they just went on weekends, didn't live there, so no animals), and my aunts (again, weekends, but they only lived about 20 minutes away, so horses, and now that they live their full time, cows). It is a lot of freaking work. The goats get eaten by coyotes, the cows die giving birth, the horses need daily care to make sure they are healthy. Then there is the plowing of the fire lanes (my parents have a 275 acre tree farm, again, don't live there). I see no point in having chickens, mice, gerbils, or hamsters, though I might take a guinea pig.
I don't want land, I don't want a pet, though I would not mind a couple of miniature goats, but we have a ton of coyotes here, so even though we can have them in the city of Atlanta, they would be food, since I live by 40 acres of woods.
I have promised DH a dog when DS goes to pre-k.
If it were strictly up to me, I would have two house rabbits that are just like Joe Bunny was. He was the best pet ever for 13 years, and I wish he was still with me.
NO CATS!
But I am more than open to dogs, birds, reptiles, and spiders. When I was a kid, I lived in the country so I would go catch my own snakes and tarantulas. It was never a good idea, but it was fun and when I got bored, I would just let them back into the yard
Since we live in the city, I don't mind getting DD whatever kind of pet she wants one day. Unless it's a cat.
no snakes!!!! lizzards are fine, but no snakes! Most of our family's scared of spiders, which is funny since they're all teenage boys, lol, besides our baby.
H says we'll never have anythiing but dogs. I wouldn't mind anything that doesn't make the house stink like sh!t. LOL I don't do litterboxes or any type of cage poop.
And no spiders. eewe
We aren't getting anything that I have to walk or take care of, so no dogs. Cats annoy me, so none of them
Really, the only pet I would allow is fish and even that won't happen for another year or so
I know, I am mean mommy

We will never get a dog. I told DH this prior to us getting married because he had dogs growing up. I had them as well, which is why I never want one. Jordan has asked numerous times growing up if we could get one and the answer was always no. She has even tried to get Ben in on it and has had him ask me to get one. It's not going to happen.
First of all, I don't like them - at all. Secondly, I know that I'm the one that's going wind up walking it, feeding it, taking it to the vet, cleaning up it's poop, etc. No thank you. Not that this really matters because my mind is that dead set against getting one, but our yard isn't fenced in and I have no interest in spending the money on a fence or an electric fence. It's just one more reason to add to the list of why we won't ever get one.
