Potty training...

First of all, I'd appreciate if negative comments are kept off of my post. Yes

That being said, my son is 17 months. I used to work for an in home therapy program for autistic children. We used to potty train kiddos in three days. We'd call the first day, the "Big Day". This is kind of similar to a few different practices that I've found online. Dr. Phil has an intense potty training program out there, and a few other's that I found all from one to three days to a month. A little more background, I've potty trained 3 boys and one girl.

Anyways, I am going shopping for all of the potty needs today and plan on trying an intense "Big Day" tomorrow. It will take us longer because we'll be doing naked potty training for at least half of the day, if not the full day, then underwear the next day. Underwear is going to be a big step because he needs to learn to pull them down himself.  Then we'll move to loose fitting pants. It's going to be a long process, and I'm not guaranteeing that it will work because he IS so young. However, I'm going to try it and see if he can learn. If he doesn't get it, I'm not going to push it. But what if he does???? If I don't try, I'd kick myself thinking, he may have been able to get it earlier.

Has anyone else tried around a year and a half?

It worked for us (18 months) but we EC'd part-time so she had a pretty good foundation for what the potty was already. I honestly think she could have done it a little sooner if I'd had time off from work like I did right at 18 months.

Good to know! I'm not working, so I felt it was a better time. Thank you!!!

  • do you mind sharing any info about the intense training program.  I got DD a potty a couple weeks ago and she has only peed in it one time.  People might think i'm crazy for starting at 1 year old

  • Why rush things....let your kids be little.  That's all.  I'm really going to try to stay out of it now.

  • I tried potty training my first when she was 18 months old.    Although she showed many "readiness" signs (pulling pants up and down herself, big interest in sitting in potty, verbalizing when she had to go), she simply wasn't ready.  We tried.  It didn't work.    I kept at it and went through all sorts of frustrations (not to mention cleaning pee off the floor in a variety of places), but I really should have stopped and tried later.

Basically, try it and if it works great!   And, if it doesn't no big deal.

fwiw:  my second child is 2 and half and I let her take the lead - basically, when she said "I want to go pee in the potty and not where diapers any more."   There was no "training" involved.    She was ready because she told me so.   So much less frustrating.

  • If you want more info, just go to google and type in "Potty training in 3 days" and a bunch of sources will come up. Good luck.

I don't think it's crazy if she's interested in it.  Molls showed interest I showed her the potty, now she poops and pees in it 75% of the time. We aren't really potty "training" yet, though, I ask if she wants to go and she tells me yes or no, or points towards the potty and we go. We still need to try out the CD trainers to see if she can pull them on and off, right now she just takes her diaper off.

  • thx....good luck  with yours.  she is already showing interest so that's why we have started already.  i have a friend that had hers trained at 6 months, i can't even imagine doing that back then

I have lots of friends whose kids are not even potty trained at age 3 and i think by then they should be, but that's just my personal opinion . it they have medical issues then that's fine.  I have not gotten extremely serious yet, but i do realize we need to get a few more potties for her bedroom and our bathroom.  we have one in the living room now so we can watch tv and do it.  1 time she held her pee for 3.5 hours which was the longest she has ever gone.  I can't wait for the day to not have to buy any diapers anymore:)

That's why these posts are so silly...six months?  Come on!!!!  Kids aren't potty trained until they get up from what they are doing, pull down their pants, take care of their business, wipe, pull up their pants,  and carry on with what they were doing.

I won't include flushing and washing hands because they need help with that part well into their teenage years I think.

  • Why on earth would you have multiple potties throughout the house? IMO, a potty belongs in the bathrooms only.

We have one in the bathroom and that's it, she goes there when she has to go, or points that way if she needs to. I was starting to wonder if more than one is the norm.

  • we have 2 levels in our house, so i thought 1 for the second level and one for the first level.  her bedroom is upstairs.  i couldn't imagine potty training at 6 months or before.  i wouldn't want to catch poop....blech

  • I know that mothers (or fathers) can learn the signs for their children and kids in other countries are potty trained at a younger age than children in America. I'm trying to potty train DS1 right now. He tells me he has to go and I take him. He is actually doing really well with it... sometimes he has accidents but that okay at least he is trying. My niece is almost 3 and is still not potty trained. She knows she has to go but refuses to use the toilet. I would really love for my son to be potty trained soon. I have double diaper duty so it will make it that much easier haha.

We tried at 17 months and while I thought she was ready, she was getting pissed by the end of the day so we stopped so there wouldn't be any negative association. Some may be ready, some may not be. As far as expecting your LO to pull down his own pants, I wouldn't hold my breath on that....

I'm in the train em young camp though. I think waiting until 3 to try is a bit rediculous.

  • DD is 19 months and I wanted to try soon bc she shows interest in the potty, loves to sit on it, etc. Last night after bath time she was running around naked and peed 3 times AS she was running. So yeah, she's not ready.

I'm in the "train them young" camp too, but I also think you have to wait till your kid is ready. Don't push it or it will only take longer and be harder--on them and on you.

  • I don't know if this counts as a negative comment, but we tried the whole 3 day PTing method (actually, the one I found was a 7 day method).  The idea is the same.  Make the kid switch to being naked or straight to underwear.  We followed it to a T and by the end of the week, there was very little progress towards PTing.  It took a solid 2 weeks to train him.  I'm talking about my first son.  He's almost 2 1/2 now.  I've never known anyone to try that young with a boy, but go for it.  As long as you don't get stressed or make him upset if he can't do it, it probably won't hurt.  There's a mom at my church who has two boys and she says that it's not good to try to PT boys really young because it can scare them off to it and then they end up training later.  I'm not sure I believe that.  I think as long as it's nonchalent, it'll be fine.

Say that when you have a three year old boy who just won't go in the potty. I waited until DS was 2y9m because he was showing NO signs of readiness and when I tried to push the issue he was really resistant. It depends a LOT on gender and temperament. My stubborn boy just started pooping in the potty three months ago (he would hold it until he got his pull-up for bedtime).

  • I have two beliefs about potty training. The first is that they won't be potty trained until they are ready. This varies based on both physical and emotional readiness.

My second belief is that we train our kids from birth to go potty in the diaper, not the toilet. So if they have only ever gone in a diaper, you will have to train them to go in the toilet. And untrain them to go in the diaper.

Which is why we started putting lo on the potty when she was about 6 weeks old. She peed and pooped on the potty every day. We rarely clean up poopy diapers and it's awesome. That being said, she is still not potty trained. She tells us she has to go sometimes, other times she pees in her diapers. A lot of it has to do with milestones and teething. If she has something else going on she tends to have more wet diapers. She almost always poops in the potty though.

We don't push it, but every once in a while we try panties and it just hasn't worked out yet. So we do diapers or lots of naked time around the house. She doesn't pee when she's naked, but we have to ask her if she has to go potty every hour or so.

  • We recently busted out the training potty. So far he just plays with it. Tonight I sat him on it, he then tried, but was trying to throw his leg over it, and it got stuck in the hole in the potty.

Potty training was as much of a pain as I expected it to be. It took DS1 about 6-8 months, and he still has times that he has pee accidents (when he's really excited or into things). And a lot of it was two-steps-forward, one-step-back with him, too. You really can't get kids to potty train until they're ready (excluding the babies who've been EC, because it's a totally different method), and sometimes that's a lot later than parents want them to be.

I'm reeeeeeally hoping DS2 will potty train earlier bc he sees his brother use the toilet, but I'm not holding my breath. I totally agree with ougrad about kids not really being PT until they can do it all by themselves...
