VBAC

vbac seems to only be good "on paper"

There's a whole lot written on the idea, concept, "fantasy" regarding vbac. All the doctors seem to be on the same page. Wishful thinking. Whatever is quick, easy, and painless for them seems to be the prescription of the day. Anyone ever actually acheive, with the assistance of their doctor and without being made to feel guilty, selfish, or petty?

  • What?

my docs are all fully on board with me going for a vbac. I am the one who is hesitant, they are all completely supportive of it

  • I agree with the others. I discussed it with my new OB/gyn at my annual and he was very much in favor of VBACs.

His opinion is the majority of women who try for a VBAC are successful (he said around 75%) so the odds are in my favor and if it ends in a RCS for some reason during labor at least I know I tried and gave it my best shot.

  • I'm experiencing the same situation as OP.   I go to a practice with multiple doctors.  Only a select few are pro-vbac. The others, not so much. I get very discouraged when meeting with them. Unfortunately, when I go into labor I get who I get.   But I refuse to sign up for a repeat CS as most  of the docs would prefer.  I honestly feel like some of the docs at my practice look at it as an assemly line...get the baby out and 'next.'  I also feel jsutified in this thinking as the situation that happened with my DD.  My water broke at 38 weeks, doc said she was high and slightly sideways and wheeled me in for a c-section within the hour.  I am finding out now that not one place in the report does it state she was sideways, only high! If I had the knowledge that I do now I would have requested to at least labor down a bit to see what progress was made.  Luckily this particular doc is no longer with the practice.  I should also note that with my first CS I gota nasty infection which required being opened back up! Yes, I should probably go elsewhere but I just dont.

  • The first OB I interviewed was in a large practice.  He was very pro-VBAC but admitted that many of the other doctors were not and I'd be "at their mercy" when I came in to deliver depending on who was on rotation that night.

That said, my midwife that I chose was fully supportive and never had a negative thought on the matter, ever.  The trick is finding the person who actually reads the latest literature and takes your safety into account before their convenience.

  • Wow, OP - a big generalization to make about "all the doctors" and their motivations!  I hope these posts are an indication that not every doctor is motivated by the "easiest" route for themselves (and I'm not clear that's a c-section, btw, given the extra liability associated with it).

  • Mine is also very supportive of a VBAC and my 2nd will be 16 months after my first. I am just trying to decide if I want to do it.

  • My OB is extremely pro-VBAC. The entire hospital I've chosen is very pro-natural. Overall VBAC rate at the hospital is 78%.
  • General statement about every single OB I've spoken to. (12) Maybe it's geography. Maybe it's my age. I need to move to more progressive ground. I'm in the midwest, the attitude here has been pathetic. I don't feel I have a chance.

  • Ugh, sorry you're having such a hard time.

Would you be willing to consider home birth? Could you travel to a hospital that is VBAC-friendly? Is there an ICAN chapter near you that you can contact?

  • Maybe you need a new doctor? My doctor was so supportive of me doing whatever I felt best about doing. He told me his opinion of the pros and cons and totally left it up to me to decide what I wanted. I ended up with a successful vbac and everyone made me feel like a rock starincluding my doctor.
